Platform not compatible message on Win XP SP2 while using Upgrade Assistant for Windows 8
Original title: Win XP, SP2
Hello: I have Windows XP, SP2. I ran the 8.1 Upgrade Assistant program for my PC and it says “platform not compatible”. My machine is 32-bit, 3GHz processor, 2 GIG RAM, 256 MB hard drive, NVidia graphics card. Evidently can not up upgrade this to 8 as this machine is only 32-bit. I need to upgrade this to SP3 before April 8^th^. I need a VALID, WORKING LINK where I can upgrade the operating system. NONE of the links provided at Microsoft's site work. Please help.

Hi,
Windows Updates no longer works until
you have service pack 3 installed. To overcome this problem you need
to get to SP3 manually.
Verify your current service pack
level...
•Hold down the Windows key (between
Ctrl and Alt) and hit the Pause Brəak
key
•Examine what is listed in the
System: section regarding your service pack level
•Also, make a note of your processor
type in the Computer: section (see later)
If there is no service pack level
designated, first you must download SP2 from...
...and then run the downloaded program
to install SP2. You can ignore the text that says that it is for
network installations and also ignore the text advising
Windows/Microsoft Update if only updating one PC.
As an alternative to SP2 you could
download SP1A (xpsp1a_en_x86.exe) from…
<<http://slug.ceca.utc.edu/ftp/pub/windows/patches/winxp/>>
…which a fellow contributor Daavee
found. It is half the size of SP2 so should be quicker. However, as
you can see, it is not a Microsoft web site.
Once you have done that, or if you were
alrəady at service pack 1,
1A or 2, you can install SP3, but before you do, rəad
this article…
<<http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950717>>
…and if your PC is an HP Pavilion,
Presario or Media Center and has an AMD processor (see above) you
need to install this patch before installing SP3…
<<http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?cc=uk&lc=en&dlc=en&softwareitem=pv-60484-2>>
Install SP3 by downloading and running
from...
…again, you can ignore the text that
says that it is for network installations and also ignore the text
advising Windows/Microsoft Update if only updating one PC.
Then try and get up to date with
Windows Updates.

2014-03-22T19:02:54+00:00 Thanks for the link. That link is ONLY for NETWORKED MACHINES. When I go to the page they recommend, it gives me this:
"To use this site, you must be running Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 or later.
To upgrade to the latest version of the browser, go to the Internet Explorer Downloads website.
If you prefer to use a different web browser, you can obtain updates from the Microsoft Download Center or you can stay up to date with the latest critical and security updates by using Automatic Updates. To turn on Automatic Updates:
- Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
- Depending on which Control Panel view you use, Classic or Category, do one of the following:
- Click System, and then click the Automatic Updates tab.
- Click Performance and Maintenance, click System, and then click the Automatic Updates tab.
- Click the option that you want. Make sure Automatic Updates is not turned off."
Under SYSTEM, my Automatic Updates is already set to YES
As per Performance and Maintenance above....that is NOT LISTED anywhere under the Control Panel
When I go back to to the Windows download center, I end up RIGHT BACK at the link for NETWORKED MACHINES. This link is not helping me. I need to install a program, it it requires SP3.
I need a VALID VERSION for a SINGLE COMPUTER
People like myself have got thousands of dollars invested in equipment and programs. We can't afford to upgrade all of it, just to upgrade the operating system to Windows 8, which may render other programs or hardware that we need completely unusable.
Please provide me with a valid link for SP3 for a single machine. Thank you.
