This problem is still not fixed.
I still cannot install Family Tree Maker 2005. I still get the same error message as above.
Can anybody offer any helpful ideas with this issue?
I believe that this may be an InstallShield problem.

[EDITED to clarify some of my notes]
I have a x86 desktop 5310S desktop from Gateway running WinXP SP3 and IE8.
I have a handfull of older Family Tree Maker data files that I need to convert to a readable format for use on the newer version 2008-2014 FTM programs.
Ancestry.com says that Family Tree Maker 2005 SE (Starter Edition) has the capability to do this and provides the downloadable 2005 SE Installer file, ftm2005se.exe, which I placed on my desktop.
Once installed the software is good for only 14 days.
When I try to run the downloaded executable file, it begins to extract the cab files, then starts preparing the InstallShieldWizard but then only gets halfway through before crashing.
An error message pops up with: "An installation support file 'C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temp{B136E4A4-7660-4f15-9752-EF8E6BA7866D}\_IsUser.dll' could not be installed. Access is denied".
On a related note, I had discontinued use of (but had not uninstalled) my previous version, Family Tree Maker 2005, whenever I first got the FTM 2008 version over 6 years ago.
They both had (seemingly) worked just fine at that time and my data files exceeded 85MB each.
But right after getting the 2008 version, I quit working on my family history and I have not tried using either one until now.
It was only recently, then, that I discovered the problems with using them.
I have tried everything I could think of, but have gotten nowhere.
Ancestry.com Customer support recommended uninstalling and reinstalling both the 2005 and the 2008 versions.
I did successfully uninstall/reinstall my FTM 2008 Version (from CD) but because of the need to convert my older files first, I can not actually use it.
Then when I tried to uninstall/reinstall the 2005 version (from CD), nothing happened on the reinstall, no error messages, absolutely nothing at all. It starts, then goes into Never, Never Land.
I have repeatedly tried to reinstall the 2005 program both with and without the MSE and Windows Firewall turned on. The results are the same each time.
My computer is fully up to date and I have run MalwareBytesAntiMalware and other antivirus and antimalware programs with nothing being found.
I am out of ideas. I need to convert my files before I lose them entirely.
Any suggestions out there?
Thanks
Vernon

Hi Andrew E.,
I did what you had suggested above, and now at least, the FTM 2005 version starts to load and it also now displays the exact same error message as the FTM 2005 SE version did:
"An installation support file 'C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temp{B136E4A4-7660-4f15-9752-EF8E6BA7866D}\_IsUser.dll' could not be installed. Access is denied".
Oh well. Does anyone else have a suggestion to try?
Thanks

Hi, Andrew E.,
Thanks for the really quick response.
After I received it, I immediately noticed that I could not edit my original post (I have a few minor things to correct there) and that I could not reply to your post either.
My system was acting real squirlly, I've never seen it do that before.
Anyway, I tried to delete the files as requested and got rid of all of them except two since I could not figure out what was keeping them out of bounds (undeletable). Went ahead and did the disk cleanup and even ran CCleaner to get rid of another 26MB of temp files and stuff.
I'll try to rerun the install on the FTM 2005 SE program and see what happens. I'll get back after dinner.
Interesting suggestion, I would never have gotten to it by myself. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Try run,type: %Temp%
In the new window,go to edit, select all, delete all, exit when thru.
Return to run,type: C:\WINDOWS\Temp
Again go to edit, select all, delete all. Some will not delete as they are
in use,a new folder might help, drag all to it that one can, delete it,exit.
Run disk-cleanup.Retry the installation
