Microsoft has gone worse, I have been getting the same problem; I even have tried reinstallin windows 8.1pro, but after completely dowloading the file to reinstall,it says your pc ran into a problem and needs to restart every 5-10 minutes of using my computer,  its just  not right, it has been  more than two weeks...sucks!!!!!

I had not used Windows since XP, recently installed Windows 8.1 to maybe switch from Java to .Net, was just reading Microsoft's "Application Architecture V2" EBook in Adobe Acrobat Reader when simply after a normal restart, BSOD pops up saying "critical_process_died".

I searched the forums and tried some fixes, but since I can't get into Safe Mode (the same error appears) there is not much I can do and to be honest, looking back at all the times I've ran into BSOD errors, I believe a clean installation is my only fix.

This is not a kind of error to expect from an operating system's released to market version. And it is kind of cruel to have your system up and running at one second, and loose everything after a plain simple restart.

So, for now I'm switching back to good old Kubuntu 14.04LTS and Mono project, hopefully Windows 10 developers consider testing their product before releasing it to market.

    Hi usa1234u,

    Hi,

From your brief description it could be the video drivers so check at the laptop maker's

site and the actual video device maker's site for updated drivers (such as Nvidia, ATI,

or Intel). Also suspect the hard drive do be sure to run checkdisk.

In "some" cases this KB article will help.

    Windows hangs or freezes

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2681286

Be sure to check with the System Maker's Support (Motherboard Maker for custom

systems), their on-line documentation and drivers, and ask in their forums (if any)

about any known issues. Be sure to update the BIOS, low level chipset drivers, and the other major on-board and separate device drivers. Those alone may

resolve some or all of these issues.

Note using Win Key + X and Win Key + W (to get to Control Panel, Run, and Settings

as needed). Win Key + D calls the desktop and the using Win Key toggles Desktop

    and Start Screen.

Translate the Windows 7 methods and use them on Windows 8/8.1Resolving stop (blue screen) errors in Windows 7 - has a section for if you can or can't

start Windows (applies to Windows 8/8.1). If you can't start Windows 8/8.1 try using

a Repair Disc (see methods to make one below) to access Safe Mode and other trouble-

    shooting steps.

Check this thread for information using BlueScreenView, MyEventViewer and other methods

to troubleshoot BlueScreens - top 3 replies (+1 other) (applies to Windows 8/8.1).

We can analyze the minidumps if you make them available from the SkyDrive or other file

sharing sites (such as MediaFire). If you have problems uploading the minidumps copy

them to the Desktop or the Documents folder and upload them from there.

Zip or upload the contents of C:\Windows\minidump

Use SkyDrive to upload collected files

Also do this so you can see the likely bluescreens.

Windows Vista automatically restarts if your PC encounters an error that causes it to crash.

Check with these utilities to see if any information can be gathered :

This is an excellent tool for posting Blue Screen Error Information

BlueScreenView - Free - scans all your minidump files created during 'blue screen of death'

crashes, and displays the information about all crashes in one table.

MyEventViewer can be checked at the time of the BlueScreen (BSOD) to with-in a

second or so of the time of the BSOD to provide more information as to possible

    cause - see TIP.

MyEventViewer - Free - a simple alternative to the standard event viewer of Windows.

TIP - Options - Advanced Filter allows you to see a time frame instead of the whole file -

set it to a bit before and after the time of the BSOD.

AppCrashView - Free - a small utility for Windows Vista and Windows 7 that displays the

details of all application crashes occurred in your system. The crashes information is extracted

from the .wer files created by the Windows Error Reporting (WER) component of the operating

system every time that a crash is occurred. AppCrashView also allows you to easily save the

    crashes list to text/csv/html/xml file.
