ASUS CD/DVD drive missing

I have read some of the other posts on this but none of the solutions seem to work for me.

I have an Asus computer with windows 7 which has been working fine for the last four years but I noticed yesterday that the CD drive (E drive) no longer shows up in My Computer and isn't reading any CDs.  It was working the day before and I haven't installed anything since then.  I also can't find the drive in device manager.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

    Hi Alex,

    1. Have you checked for the upper and lower filter and fix the corrupt registry entries?
    2. Have you reinstalled the CD/DVD driver?

Please try to reinstalling the CD/DVD driver from manufacturer's website.

    a.Go to the Device Manager.

    b. Expand DVD/CD-ROM drives, right-click the CD and DVD devices, and then click Uninstall.

    c. Now, go to the Asuswebsite and install the CD/DVD driver.

    Hi

I was about to try these fixes when I discovered the CD drive had just started working again.  It worked well for almost a week but now the same problem is happening.  I have tried all the fixes from the support site and none have worked.  I can't take it to ASUS because they don't have any offices in my city and I need the laptop for my work.

I have no idea what's going on.
