Windows 7 - screen saver won't activate

My problem is that my screen saver will not operate at all, no matter what settings I use. It does work when I use the 'preview' function though. I am using the inbuilt standard screensavers. No errors pop up, the screen saver just does not actuivate when the alloted time has passed.

I am running Windows 7 x64. It's updated to the fullest extent via Windows Update. My mobo is a Gigabyte X79-UD3 running F16 Bios, the latest version.

I recently replaced my graphics with a new GTX 780Ti and I am using the latest drivers but the problems existed before the upgrade.

My screen saver is set to blank screen after 1 minute (just for testing, it's normally set to 10 minutes) and used to work perfectly in the past. I can't honestly remember when it stopped working as I am usually at the computer, so have no need of it. All my displays are set to turn off after 30 minutes (three Dell U2413 24" WS monitors), my computer is set to never sleep and hard drive set to never turn off (Kingston SSD as C: drive). Allow wake timers set to disabled. USB selective suspend setting set to disabled. All Human input devices have "Aloow this device to wake the computer" unticked.

I am using a Wireless Logitech G700s mouse and wired Logitech G19 keyboard. I mention this as my research has said that this could be the cause. However, I have removed and uninstalled the keyboard and mouse drivers and this hasn't rectified my problem. I am using the latest drivers for both, downloaded and installed from the manufacturers website today.

My Powercfg /energy report highlighted the issue for me I think and I list them below. My problem is that I have no idea how to fix these errors, so any help would be really gratefully received please.

For reference, my Device Manager is saying that I have three Generic USB Hubs, four USB Composite Devices, one USB Mass Storage Device and two USB Root Hubs, all seemingly not entering 'suspend state.'

I've tried various other things over the last two months or so since I noticed this issue but I can't honestly remember what they are. Please respond if you have any ideas and I will happily reply with the results.

I am using ESET Node32 and I have tried this with that switched off but no luck.

I have used sfc /scannow but the system file checker doesn't report any errors.

I can manually run all the screensavers by using the 'Preview' button and they all work fine when done using this method.

    Hello,

Thank you for keeping us updated on the status of the issue.

To get the screen saver and power options to work while a wireless mouse or keyboard is plugged in, use the following steps:

    a. Click Start and then click All Programs.

    b. Click Windows Update then download updates, if needed.

    c. Click on the link "Review optional updates" and then from these optional updates, select "Microsoft HID non-user input data filter ".

    d. Install the update.  Once done, the screen saver and power options will function normally even while a wireless mouse is connected.

If it does not help, then check the issue in new user account.

    Refer:

    Create a user account

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/create-user-account

If issue does not persist in new user account, then copy all the data from old user account to new one.

    Refer:

    Fix a corrupted user profile

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/fix-corrupted-user-profile

    I hope this information helps.

    Thank you

    Hello,

Thank you for visiting Microsoft Community.

As per the description I understand that screen saver is not working on your Windows 7 computer. However, it shows up in preview function. You have tried a number of troubleshooting steps like resetting screen saver settings, changing power settings, uninstalling and reinstalling mouse and keyboard drivers, running SFC Scan, but none of them helped you enough to get this problem resolved.

I would appreciate if you can provide us the following information to help us understand the issue better.

    1. Which Windows 7 version is installed on your computer?
    2. Was screensaver feature working earlier on this computer?

If you have upgraded to Windows 7 Home Basic or Windows 7 Starter from a previous version of Windows, you can no longer right-click the desktop to change your screen saver and other appearance settings.

Sometimes this issue appears when some program continue to run in the background when the computer is idle, possibly some program is running in the background on your computer which could be sending input to the computer and therefore actually keeping your computer active.

Let’s try these methods below to check if that solves the problem.

Method 1: Let’s perform clean boot and check if issue persists.

Performing clean boot state helps in identifying if any third party applications or startup items are causing the issue

Clean boot is the process of starting your computer by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs so that you can determine whether a background program is interfering with your computer performance.

When you start Windows by using a normal startup, several applications and services start automatically, and then run in the background. These programs include basic system processes, antivirus software, system utility applications, and other software that has been previously installed. One or more of these programs may cause Windows to run slow. Through Clean boot we can identify which particular program is causing this issue.

You may follow the steps in the article below to perform clean boot.

How to perform a clean boot in Windows

Note: After you have finished troubleshooting, follow these steps from section “How to reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting” to reset the computer to start as usual.

    Method 2:

If performing clean boot does not help, let’s check creating a new power plan and check if the issue still persists.

Follow the steps in the article below to create a new power plan (Just for the diagnostic purposes)

Change, create, or delete a power plan (scheme):

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Change-create-or-delete-a-power-plan-scheme

    Method 3:

Disable the option to automatically turn-off the display after a specified amount of time and check what happens.

    1. Click Start and select Control Panel
    2. Select System and Security.
    3. Click Power Options.
    4. On the Select a power plan page, on the left, click Choose when to turn off the display.
    5. Change the setting under Turn off the display to Never.

Hope this helps. Please let us know the results. Feel free to write us back for any further assistance, we’ll be glad to assist you

Hi there and many thanks for your reply. Sorry for my late reply but work got in the way. I apologise.

I have Windows 7 Ultimate and it was a clean install, rather than an upgrade from a previous version.

Yes the screen saver used to work but to be honest, I can't remember when it stopped. I know that it was working last year and noticed that at some point this year it had stopped working. In that time, I have upgraded my mouse and graphics card but the problem persisted before the graphics card change (I went from a Radeon to Geforce card so uninstalled the old drivers and installed the completely new set).

I have also uninstalled both my Logitech mouse and keyboard software and also uninstalled the HID and other USB devices in Device Manager but none of them have rectified the problem.

I tried all your methods, starting at the top and unfortunately none of them appear to have resolved this issue, my screen saver still will not work.

I would be more than grateful to hear of any other suggestion you may have please.
