vertical line down screen

hi, my laptop has a white vertical line that runs down the center (or almost center) of the screen. the first time it appeared was 3 days ago, Wednesday. when I turned on my laptop it was there from the start up screen and stayed till shut down. Thursday when I turned it on the line was gone and did not reappear at all that day. Friday it appeared again and stayed. It showed up again today. the laptop wasn't dropped or squeezed so im concerned as to how this happened or what caused it. the laptop is not yet a year old and has had some crashes (at least that's what I think they were). I usually run the dell check up and the only problem I have had reoccur was something to do with the DVD-RW SU which said something about it not being supported. could that be the problem? will that be fixed if I upgrade to windows 8.1? I tried Google but I don't understand what they were talking about. I read about running a BOST (or something like that) test to check to see if it was a system problem or hardware problem. I tried it but im not sure if it worked. so im here for help. any suggestions welcomed, thanks.

hi, the model of my dell is inspiron 15.

I got a message to upgrade my drivers or something like that and I did. I followed the instructions and it seems to be working. I think it was the display drivers (whatever those are) like you said because the screen looked like it was doing a reboot then restarted. I am monitoring it and if the upgrade fails I will follow your suggestions.

thanks a lot for the quick response!

    hi again.

the line has reappeared again. I tried the steps you suggested but I couldn't find the display drivers. I looked under display adapters and DVD/CD ROM drivers, to see if I would find it. when that didn't help I just went to the link you sent. I saw the BIOS and reinstalled and updated that. it didn't work. so im at a loss.

It is more likely a hardware failure than anything in the software.  It is less common than it used to be but it sounds like you have a defective screen.

As it is less than a year old contact the manufacturer or seller for a repair.
