list index out of bounds (-1) after update to windows 8.1

I have been playing the game Quake 4 for a while now on my PC which was running Windows 8. I initially had some issues with compatibility, but I got that all resolved without too much trouble. However, after upgrading to Windows 8.1, I cannot access the game. When the disk is inserted and I try to use the desktop shortcut, it tells me that the disk needs to be inserted, as if it is unable to read the disk. When I try to use autorun.exe on the disk, I get the error message "list index out of bound (-1)" followed by the message "Runtime error 216 at 004041EE" I am aware that the second message is associated with an old trojan horse from 1999, which seems odd considering that this is a program from a DVD and I have never used the online version of the game.

I have tried reinstalling the game entirely, using the same method that worked before, but the exact same error messages are always displayed.

Obviously this is not a particularly crucial issue, but I would really like to be able to play the game again, so any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

This is a problem with the game itself, the game is keeping an internal list of items.  Say these items are listed 0 through 9 and clicking the button is trying to access item -1. There is no such item in the list so you get this error.

You would probably be better off asking the game support as they would have better idea on how to fix such issues.

to be honest, I'm not entirely sure how you would install it initially on windows 8.1

When I initially installed the game, my computer was running windows 8 and I was able to install using the XP compatibility mode. Install didn't work perfectly; I had to manually copy and paste the actual Quake4.exe file from my DVD drive to the Quake 4 folder on my hard drive, but once I did that it worked well. When I upgraded to windows 8.1 it initially worked, but with some glitches so I uninstalled it and tried reinstalling it, with the results that I described in my first post. The only way that I got it to work again was to to a system restore to the point immediately after my upgrade to 8.1, after which I've gotten it to work smoothly. My guess is that there is some change in directory pathways that is unique to windows 8.1 that causes the installation process to fail, and I honestly have no idea why it works when the game is already installed at the time of the upgrade.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help

Hi, can you tell us what you did to fix the issue, since I've tried all of the compatibilitym odes and none works. The game worked on WinXP perfectly, on Win7 it worked with compatibility mode, on 8.1 it won't work at all, with the same error screen you described.

    Thank you!
