Windows 7 not recognizing Patriot 256GB Flash Drive

My work computer (Windows 7 OS) does not recognize my 256GB Patriot Superperformance XT flash drive.  My Alienware home computer (Windows 7) recognizes it fine.  The computer that doesn't recognize it makes a strange noise when I plug it in.  Is there a setting I need to change in order for it to be recognized?  I also have a Patriot 64G XT flash drive that is recognized fine by my work computer.

    Hello Chuck,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community Forum.

    1. Did you make any significant hardware or software changes to the computer prior to this issue?
    2. Do you get any error message when it is not detected? If YES, what is the complete and exact error message that you receive?

I understand that the USB device is not getting detected by your computer. The issue may arise if the currently loaded USB driver has become unstable or corrupt or if your PC requires an update for issues that may conflict with a USB device and Windows. This may also occur if your USB controllers may have become unstable or corrupt. So, I would suggest you to try the following steps and check if the issue persists.

    Method 1:

Please the following fixit(s) provided below. They'll help you resolve common issues related to USB ports and devices.

If Method 1 does not help, try method 2.

    Method 2:

Remove and reinstall all USB controllers.

    1. Open Device Manager by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Security, and then, under System, clicking Device Manager. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
    2. In the list of hardware categories, find and expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
    3. Right-click every device under the Universal Serial Bus controllers node, and then click Uninstall to remove them one at a time.
    4. Restart the computer, and let the USB controllers get reinstalled.
    5. Plug in the removable USB device, and then test to make sure that the issue is resolved.

If the issue still exists, proceed to Method 3.

    Method 3:

This method will install the latest device drivers for your USB device.

    1. Click the Startbutton, type Windows Update in the Search box, then click Windows Update in the results pane.
    2. Click Check for Updates. After the scan is complete, click Review optional updates.
    3. Click the check box next to the updates, then click Install updates.
    4. If prompted, review the license agreement, then click I Accept.
    5. Follow the onscreen instructions to download and install the updates.
    6. If prompted, reboot your computer.
