I've never heard of a 'troubled history' with Realtek driver software.
Realtek software is completely safe, assuming you download the software from the Realtek site,
or you motherboard mfg's site, which is the better option as the
motherboard mfg sometimes make modifications to suit their hardware.
The same applies even more so with OEM PC mfg's (DELL, HP, etc.) if you are using one of these PC's.
"Audio drivers available for download from the Realtek website are general drivers for our audio ICs, and may not offer the customizations made by your system/motherboard manufacturer. To be sure you obtain the full features/customizations provided in your original audio product, please download the latest drivers from your system/motherboard manufacturer's website."
