C:\WINDOWS\system32\<LANG_NAME>\mstsc.exe.MUI on Windows 8.1 when I start Remote Desktop Client

Hi all,

Since this week I am not able to use my Remote Desktop Client (mstsc.exe) on my Windows 8.1 (x64) machine. When I want to start the Remote Desktop application a message box pops up saying:

The system cannot find the file specified. C:\WINDOWS\system32<LANG_NAME>\mstsc.exe.MUI

The only thing I know that changed on my PC this week is that I ran Microsoft Update (because of the famous IE bug fix).

When I search for the file mstsc.exe.MUI on my PC it cannot be found (so also not in other Language folders en-US, en-GB, ja-JP etc.)

Is there a way to get Remote Desktop running again? Reinstall?

Hope anyone can help, especially since my other pc has no keyboard/display/etc. and I only use it through RDP.

Best,

Daniël

Not really, the only option is a Refresh option that reinstalls the entire \Windows directory (contents of the \users folder is untouched). It's not exactly an immediate gratification option though: you'll have to go manually reinstall any non-Store apps like Chrome, Firefox, or Office.

Here's the details: http://skeene.net/answers/posts/Restore.html

    Hi Shawn,

    Thanks for your response :-)

But unfortunately the result is still the same:

"The system cannot find the file specified. C:\WINDOWS\system32<LANG_NAME>\mstsc.exe.MUI"

    Hi Shawn,

Thanks for taking time to reply.

I tried system restore, and even that did not work.

Btw, there was only one restore point to choose from, created by Windows Update when I did my update (for the famous IE bug).

Is there a way to reinstall the Remote Desktop client?

Oh okay I think I see. I thought the MSTSC executable was not loading, but it sounds to me like it is loading fine, it just cannot find the language files. Have you recently installed any language packs?

    Here's what I'd do:

Since the problem just began recently, you can restore Windows back to an earlier point in time, called a restore point. System Restore doesn’t change your personal files. It only takes a couple minutes, and you can undo the process or try another date if it doesn't fix the problem on the first try. When you aren't sure where to go, this is by far the safest, fastest, and easiest option to try first.

    1. Press **![](http://skeene.net/answers/win8.jpg)+R** to show the Run box, type

RSTRUI and click OK. 2. Choose a date when the computer was working correctly, and click Next to restore the system files from that date. 3. Check to see if the problem is fixed. If not, you can go back to step 1 to either undo the restore, or try another date.

I think you have the file name wrong. Try this out.

    1. Press +R to show the run box.
    2. Type mstsc and click OK

Does the remote desktop client open now?
