Windows 8.1 and Sonicwall Netextender

So I have to use Dell SonicWall Netextender for work and I have been having issues using it since the update to 8.1. So to start with some information, everything used to work on Windows 8 no problem using Netextender version 7.0.196. Now I can get it working in windows 8.1 if I uninstall it, reinstall it, restart my computer, I am then able to use it without any problems for several hours. I have been trying to figure out why it works and then stops working but haven't exactly been able to figure it out as of yet. I have noticed it almost appears that windows 8.1 treats netextender like it is a modem and after a few hours it deactivates that modem and I cannot get it to reactive. I noticed this on netextenders "advanced network settings" as after I do a fresh install there is the little phone icon but after a few hours and it stops working that phone icon has a red X over it. Going through device manager it still shows SonicWall Netextender Adapter under the network adapters and says the drivers are good and everything is up to date. Anyone got any ideas? All I've been able to assume up to this point is there is an issue within windows 8.1 and using anything that gets labeled as a modem.

Well I never did update this since I honestly forgot about this post but I did end up finding what was causing the issue. So hopefully if anyone else has this problem and googles it then this will maybe help them out.

So quick recap, SonicWALL installs and works for short period of time and then stops working and requires reinstall to work again. Windows seemed to treat connection as a modem.

What appears to have been causing the issue was my cell phone drivers as odd as it sounds. Plugging phone into the computer would cause Samsung "modem" drivers to install in case you wanted to tether cell phone to computer for internet access. Anyways for whatever reason having these 2 "modems" was causing conflicts. SonicWALL has been working fine ever since uninstalling the Samsung mobile modem drivers I think it was called. Anytime I plug my phone into my computer now to transfer files or anything I have to make sure these modem drivers aren't installed (in device manager) and if they are then uninstall them again.

I hope those that google this problem will find some help with Netextender and Win 8.1 Pro.

The new local install version works fine (7.5.216).  Download it from MySonicwall.

One glitch I did run into was that you must check to make sure that there is only one Sonicwall Netextender Adapter under network adapters in device manager.  Even though you uninstall older versions, the uninstall does not remove that device.  It more than one are there, it will not connect.  Run the uninstall and check to see if you need to delete them manually, reboot, then install the 7.5.216 client.

Also, it is handy to just go ahead and change the remote access auto connection manager service to Auto in the services MMC.

No changes to the firewall were needed.

I have not gotten IE 11 to work with Virtual Office.  I basically abandoned that and used the client.  And I know this is not exactly a response to Ryan's query above, but I hope this helps someone avoid searching out some of these items.

    SGeo.
