ACCESS DENIED - Error applying security info

I have my HDD partitioned with one running W7 (Home Premium) and another with W8. (Both 64 bit NTFS)

I have another large partition used as a 'data store' (no O/S installed) for Docs, photos, music etc.

W7 and W8 were working OK and able to access the data store partition - UNTIL

Yesterday I updated W8 to W8.1.

The W7 partition still 'sees' the data partition and is able to access all the folders/files (Thank goodness).

The new W8.1 can 'see' the data partition but thinks it is empty and cannot get access.

On trying, I get "Error Applying Security Info" - System Volume\ Indexer Volume Grid" (for the data volume drive letter) and "Failed to enumerate objects in the container - ACCESS DENIED"

I have spent hours 'tinkering' with the Drive>Properties>Security settings on both drives (W8.1 & Date Drive) without success - and not without much confusion as what the problem is.

I have a suspect, which may or may NOT be to blame - the data drive seems to have 'acquired' a new folder since the W8.1 update - notably a 'System Volume Information' folder which contains 'Chkdsk' and '.dat' files which I assume may have been instigated by the W8.1 system (unbeknown to me) running Check

Disk during installation.

Can anyone help with this PLEASE.................My W8.1 is useless unless it can access my data.

    Solution worked for me.

Issue for me happened after using Homegroup shares by setting folders to shared with Everyone/Nobody. Later on after a reinstall the standard way of applying permissions through file properties wasn't working due to the folders being set to Nobody, and the original creator no longer existing.

Still, should not be running into the access denied errors as administrator.

Thank you Winston for your prompt reply to my question.

But 'oh dear' my feeble brain is really struggling to get to grips with this problem (I am cursing the day I updated from W8 to 8.1)

I have spent endless hours trying to resolve this by using your formula (above) and as many variations as I could conjure - all without success

The Command Prompt has returned various replies from 'access denied' , 'file or directory not found' to 'invalid argument'

I am almost certain that the problem was originally caused when W8.1 did a CHECKDISK scan during the installation process (I have now disabled the CHKDSK to prevent it doing more harm ?)

My responding query is - which partition/drive/volume am I supposed to be getting 'ownership' of ?

Is it the W8.1 partition OR is it the Data Store Partition ?

Dare I ask for the 'complete idiots guide' with apologies for my now totally confused state of mind as to how I get out of this mess.

I read somewhere on my 'surfing' expeditions on this problem that someone reported that same problem was cured with a Windows UPDATE. Unfortunately I have not had an update since installation (Is this another problem for me ?)
