The strange thing about Microsoft Word is that if you try to open a '.asd' file that is not in the Recovery Folder

    (usually '%appdata%\Microsoft\Word')

then it will refuse to recognize it altogether!

But if you put the very same file in the Recovery Folder

(or even in a subdirectory of the Recovery Folder),

then Word will open it without so much as a whisper of complaint!

So just open an Explorer window,

    paste '%appdata%\Microsoft\Word'

    (without the quotes)

in the Address Bar and hit 'Enter'

Copy and paste your '*.asd' file into the open folder and click on the file to open it.

    It will ask you:

'How do you wish to open this type of file (.asd)?'

'Look for an App in the Store'

    'More Options'

    Choose 'More Options'

Tick the box []'Use this application for all .asd files'

and scroll all the way down to 'Word (desktop)'

    and click on it.

    Home and dry!

    Heya

i know this is a late reply but i thought i would as ive had a similar problem but just managed to fix it!

a file that i forgot to save was auto recovery' saved by word, it was then seen on my computer as a ASD file which as youve said above you had the a similar problem.

I tried the suggestion above ^^^ but had NO luck whatsoever so i read around on the internet and tried out a few things,

to be able to open your file you've got to go onto the open window on word,

select on the FILE TYPE DROP DOWN = retrieve text from all files

then double click on your file in the open box that has ASD next to it,

and HOPEFULLY surely it should work!

i tried endless things with mine and this was the only thing that worked,

    good luck!

    Hi,

I would suggest you to rename the file and check. Follow the steps mentioned below.

    a.       Right click on the .asd file and then click on rename.

    b.      Type the document name and type the extension to .doc.

    c.       Check whether you are able to open the file.

I would suggest you to follow the steps mentioned in Method 3 that is given in the article mentioned below.

I have tried this and it will not allow us to open the .asd file. We have even tried to change the extension to .doc and it says that the "Microsoft cannot open this file because it is an unsupported file type". How do we get it to open?

    Thanks in advance
