missing many DLLs, unable to do Windows Update, after hibernation.

Quite some time ago - a couple of months - I hibernated my windows system, which I have never done before (just leave it running).  It uses an Asus P6T Deluxe motherboard.  Windows 7 64-bit "Ultimate".

On restarting, many things were not right.

I have corrected the "many things" with re-installs of software, but now I can't do Windows Update, getting error message 80073712.  I have tried at least:

  • "sfc /scannow": 'Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.'
  • running a Repair (from the windows install disk, \setup.exe): "Windows Installer has stopped working", "C000009c".  I ran it as Administrator.
  • the "System Update Readiness Tool" - it ran without error, but nothing changed.
  • I ran some other tool (don't recall which one) that told me about missing / corrupted DLLs - 12 in all - that appear to be related to Windows Update: mshtml.dll, shdocvw.dll, browseui.dll, msxml.dll, gpkcsp.dll, sccbase.dll, slbcsp.dll, initpki.dll, wuaueng1.dll, wucltui.dll, wuweb.dll, qmgr.dll.  This list is hand-typed from screenshots and may contain typos.

I will not be re-installing Windows from scratch - too disruptive.  Ditto upgrading to Win 8.  Having said that, over time, systems need security patches and I am at a loss as to how to proceed.

Any thoughts?

Ramesh, thank you for your reply.  I took the time today to go through everything, here are the results:

    M1 1) "fix it" - no change.

M1 2) "windows update troubleshooter" - some items fixed, some not, pdf: windows_update_troubleshooter_20140329, in this link: http://comrace.ca/temp/windows_update_troubleshooter_20140329.pdf

M2 did a clean boot; re-ran "fix it" - no change.  re-ran "win update troubleshooter", some items marked fixed, some not, pdf: windows_update_troubleshooter_20140329_clean_boot, in this link: http://comrace.ca/temp/windows_update_troubleshooter_20140329_clean_boot.pdf

    returned to normal boot.

M3 do the steps in "Unable to install updates in Windows Vista, Windows 7" (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2509997/en-us)

      1- not applicable

2-checksur: "installation complete" (installed some hotfix, didn't get the number), then tried windows update: same error (80073712); log is "CbsPersist_20140329205819.cab" in this link: http://comrace.ca/temp/CbsPersist_20140329205819.cab

3-sfc /scannow - as before, would not run

4-reset catroot2, retry windows update, no change.

5-remove incorrect registry values; none exist to remove.

6-register the windows update files; no error messages from registration; retry windows update, same error.

7-antivirus - I use ms security essentials, so this is not an issue

8-rename software distribution folder; did the commands, retry windows update, same error

9-bits queue; did the commands, retry windows update, same error.

10-manuall install, 958056 update; did "review update history", which is empty except for "You have not tried to install any updates for your computer".  So I could not complete method 10.

11-rename pending.xml - did the "takeown" command, "ERROR: The system cannot find the file specified." - so I could not complete method 11

12-chkdsk on windows partition - did the command (needed to reboot to do the chkdsk); nothing material appeared; retried windows update, same error.

    So.. any further suggestions?

    Hello Aspirinmine,

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community Forum with detailed information.

I must appreciate your efforts which you took from your end to fix the problem so we would proceed further and provide the steps apart from which you had already tried.

Try the below steps and check if it helps.

    Method 1

    Step 1

I would suggest you to run the fix it from the article provided below.

Fix the problem with Microsoft Windows Update that is not workinghttp://support.microsoft.com/mats/windows_update/

    Step 2

Try to run the Windows Update Troubleshooter.

    Open the Windows Update troubleshooter

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/open-the-windows-update-troubleshooter

Method 2Try installing the update in a clean boot state.

Putting your system in Clean Boot state helps in identifying if any third party applications or startup items are causing the issue. You need to follow the steps from the article mentioned below to perform a Clean Boot.

How to perform a clean boot in Windows

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135/en-us

Note: Refer "How to reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting" to reset the computer to start as normal after troubleshooting.

    Method 3

You may also try the steps from the below link apart from the steps which you have already tried:

Unable to install updates in Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2509997

Important: This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the windows help article below.

    Back up the registry

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Back-up-the-registry

    Chkdsk disclaimer.

While performing chkdsk on the hard drive if any bad sectors are found on the hard drive when chkdsk tries to repair that sector if any data available on that might be lost

Hope this helps. Please do let us know if you need further assistance with Windows, we’ll be glad to assist you.

    Thank you.
