* Original Title: Opening/Uploading files from the Modern UI in Windows 8.1

Hey there,

I've had this problem for quite some time and I don't really know how to fix this or if there even is a fix at all.

I like working in the Modern UI, so let's say I open the IE app and go to a social networking site like facebook. I want to upload a photo so I click on the upload button which on the desktop would take me to the windows explorer to choose the photo I want to upload. Now, in the Modern UI it takes me to my SkyDrive. But since the photo I want to upload is not on my SkyDrive/in the SkyDrive folder, I click on "Computer". But instead of the contents of my computer, I get nothing at all. It simply says "There are no files or folders in this view". SO in order to upload a photo, I have to put the photo into the SkyDrive folder and then I will be able to select it from the Modern UI. Why is that? I want to be able to browse the contents of my computer in the Modern UI to find my file.

This problem persists throughout all Modern UI apps, whenever I need to browse for a file to upload/open it. Is there any way to fix that?

    Hi Phil,

I understand that it must be frustrating, but rest assured, we are here to help fix your issue and guide you in the right direction.

We have seen some instances of this issue who are using AutoDesk360 program. To test the issue, I would have you remove the program and check if it helps.

Once you delete the program, select the “Ctrl+ U”keys and check if you are able to view all the files and settings.

You may also unhide the file and folders and see if there is any difference.

    1. Press Windows Key + W Key, type: Hidden.
    2. Click Show Hidden Files and Folders.
    3. Then click Show hidden files, folders, and drivesunder View tab.
    4. Click OK and Apply.

If the issue persists, try to reproduce the issue using the desktop version of Internet Explorer.

Please take your time and reply with the status. We will be glad to assist you.

I tried both things now with no changes. When I change the ownership of C:/Program data/ Microsoft/Search/Dataand then run the Search and Indexing Troubleshooter, the same issue occurs. When I get back to said location, it seems the ownership was reset to SYSTEM.

Also, I did try Method 2, but my problem's still there.

    Hello Phil,

    We Appreciate your quick reply.

Based on the description you provided in the reply, it appears that this issue could occur if Library folders which are moved to different drive are not included in the search index and that could be a reason why the apps are not able to search for files.

I would suggest you to try the following methods and check if that resolves the issue.

Method 1: Run the Search and Indexing Troubleshooter

This troubleshooter is an automated Windows 8.1 inbuilt tool which finds and fixes the common issues with the Search and Indexing feature of Windows 8.1. Perform these steps to run this tool and check if that helps.

    a)       Press “Windows Logo” + “W” keys from the keyboard.

    b)       Type “Troubleshooting” in the search bar and press “ENTER”.

    c)       In the “Troubleshooting” window, click on “View All” on the left pane.

    d)        Click on “Search and Indexing”.

    e)       Click on “Advanced” and then click on “Run as Administrator”.

    f)        Click “Next” and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the troubleshooting process.

Please check the troubleshooting report and let’s know the details. You may also try the suggestions given by the troubleshooter and check if that resolves the issue. If that doesn’t help, then try the next method to rebuild the Windows 8.1 Search Index on the computer and check if that resolves the issue.

Method 2: Rebuild Windows 8.1 Search Index

Before you rebuild the Windows 8.1 Search Index, you should make sure that the indexing is turned “ON” in the computer and then follow these steps.

    a)       Press “Windows Logo” + “X” keys on the keyboard and select “Control Panel” from that list.

    b)       Select either of the options: “Small icons” or “Large icons” from the “View by” menu on the upper-right corner of the  “Control Panel” window.

    c)       Click on “Indexing Options”.

    d)       Click on the “Advanced” button at the bottom of the “Indexing Options” window. This displays a new window titled “Advanced Options”.

    e)       Click the “Index Settings” tab, if it isn’t selected already.

    f)        Click the “Rebuild” button to delete and rebuild the file index.

    g)       Click “OK” to confirm.

Now, try searching within the apps and check if you are able to get the desired results. Please get back to us with the updates.

Thanks for responding so quickly. I do not use AutoDesk360, it's not installed on my computer. I also tried your other suggestions, but none of them worked. Whenever I click on "Computer" it shows me my libraries (Documents, Photos, Videos, etc), but when I click on, let's say "Desktop" to choose a file that's on my Desktop, it says there are no files there and I'm unable to go back and select a different folder. It just stays on that screen.

Oh and uploading files works perfectly fine using the desktop version of IE. Windows explorer opens, I'm able to go into folders and back & select files. It's the modern UI way of doing it that doesn't work.
