After 4 years, Microsoft is still struggling to understand fnt files.. They still don't work. Such a pity!
.fnt Font file: when I try to install bitmap font files, it refuses them
So, I'm running Windows 7, and when I try to install bitmap font files, it refuses them. I have a few of these that I'd like to use, but I can't, to my knowledge. I've tried googling this and nothing I found can help. Has anyone found anything that might fix this? A win7 patch or a program that would convert the .fnts into something usable, like a .ttf?
I also saw the other thread at
entitled 'Windows 7 and Bitmap fonts' but it says: "You are not authorized to perform this action." when I click into it, so... yeah.
Thanks,
-Kyle

2010-07-03T20:15:27+00:00 I'm sorry, but not only is Step 1 just bad advice, I also said I tried Step 2 to no avail.
Ok, well, I tried Step 1 and just as I thought, it didn't work. Windows does not recognize this as a usable font.
As for Step 2, I've tried searching all over the internet for a program that would turn a .fnt to a .ttf, but nothing turns up. Mostly all of them can turn a .ttf into a .fnt though, but that's useless to me. A few mention converting .fnt to .ttf, but they all cost near around $30-40. This is not what I want.
So, basically what you're telling me is that Windows 7 has neither the ability to use .fnts, nor do you have plans of adding an ability to? It seems like somebody at Microsoft would be able to ask about this, but I guess not. Thanks for your attempts though.
I dunno, I just think the ability to use all fonts would help Windows 7 customers, no matter if OpenType or TrueType fonts are the future.

2010-06-24T22:44:17+00:00 Firstly, the way I attempt to install the fonts (.fnt) is to drag the font file into the font folder. When I do, it requests for administrator permission to allow the Font Folder program to make changes to my computer. I click yes, and it almost immediately comes up with a caution box saying ' Cannot install century_gothic_big.fnt ', ' The file 'C:\Program Fi...\century_gothic_big.fnt' does not appear to be a valid font. ' [Close]
Upon hitting close, it simply ends the process. This is why I was wondering if there was some way for Win7 to recognize the font.
Also, the link didn't help, but thanks for the attempt.

1. What happens when you try install bitmap font files?
I would suggest you to follow the steps given under**“** **Should I be aware of any issues when installing fonts? ”**in the below mentioned link and then try to install fonts, check if the issue is fixed.

There are no Microsoft programs to convert fonts.
