Spanish Latin American Keyboard Layout disappeared

Hello everyone! It seems that the Spanish Latin American Keyboard Layout option disappeared overnight from Windows 8 Pro. Now the only options available are "Spanish" and "Spanish Variation", neither of which conform to the original Spanish Latin American Layout. Any ideas? Please note that I'm not asking about the procedure to switch input or display languages. I know that procedure. The problem is that the entry for "Spanish Latin American" keyboard (abbreviated LAA on the Language Bar, back when it was available) disappeared, and now I only have the options of "Spanish" and "Spanish variation". I do have the Spanish Latin American option in the overall Language options. It's only the Latin American keyboard layout that's missing. As stated, this happened overnight; no new software was installed, but I did switch mice (from a vanilla Logitech to a Logitech gaming mouse). But that couldn't possibly... or could it? Any help will be appreciated. Best regards.

Pablo

Hi Pablo,

This could be an issue with the language bar settings on the computer.

Are you referring to the language bar at the taskbar on the desktop?

If you are referring to language bar at the taskbar, I would suggest you to disable and re-enable the language bar and check if it fixes the issue.

Follow the methods:

Method 1:

Follow the steps to disable and re-enable the language bar:

a)      Press Windows and X key together and select Control Panel.

b)      Click on Language.

c)       Click on Advance settings.

d)      Under switching methods, uncheck the box which shows “Use desktop language bar when it’s available”.

e)      Close the window and follow the same steps to move to advance settings for Language.

f)       Check the box which shows “Use desktop language bar when it’s available”.

g)      Click on Apply and then on OK.

Check if it resolves the issue. If not, proceed to method 2.

Method 2:

I would suggest you to try the steps and check if it helps:

a. Right click on task bar and click on Properties.

b. Click Taskbar tab.

c. Click on customize button for Notification Area.

d. Click on Turn System icons on or off.

e. Select On from the drop down menu, for input indicator.

f. Click on Ok.

g. Now check if it helps.

I had the same problem, but found a much simpler solution. The Spanish Latin American keyboard is still there in the list, but it has been renamed. Look under L -Latin American.

In Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Language

Press the "Add a language" button and select Español to open

There you can see all the variations of keyboard input for that language.

Later you can set that configuation to be the default one.

    Hi Pablo,

Thank you for an update on this issue.

Did you find the Latin American Spanish keyboard layout option on the language bar after the updates?

Please let us know if the issue still persists. Otherwise, you can always contact us if you have any other query related to Windows.

    Hello Pinaki:

Thank you very much for your assistance. Unfortunately, the Latin American keyboard layout entry didn't just disappear from the Language Bar, but from the list of available keyboards in the Control Panel/Language window. The procedure I originally used was as follows: Control Panel - Language, then Add a Language, where I selected US English as display language, with Spanish Latin American as keyboard layout. Then I selected that Language scheme as my primary option, and that would be it. In the Language Bar I would have two entries: English display/Spanish Latin American Keyboard (ENG/LAA), and English display/US Keyboard (ENG/US) to use whenever I needed. But sometime this week, overnight, the Latin American option vanished, not only from the Language Bar, but from the list of available keyboard layouts in the Control Panel/Language window. Now, the only entries for Spanish keyboard layout are Spanish and Spanish Alternative (in that same Control Panel/Language window) . What I didn't include in my original question (because I found out just last night) is that the same thing happened on my two other household computers, both with Windows 8 Pro, so I'm thinking that the cause was an Update or something similar. I always have automatic updates enabled, so I don't always notice when they install.

Anyway, thanks again for your quick response. I'm thinking that the easiest fix will be to teach my fingers the new position of the special characters ;-)

Have a great weekend, and best regards.
