Decreasing the time it takes for mouse hover on file or folder to display a tool-tip or pop-up

I have tried multiple apparent solutions online, but cannot seem to get a quicker response time for when I leave the mouse cursor over a file or folder, for a pop-up to display the information. I remember very well being able to do this in previous versions of Windows (I am using Windows 8.1 x64) and have a much more powerful computer in every way.

Note, things I have tried with unsuccessful results:

  • Removed/unchecked options in the performance>visual effects portion of the control panel involving fading and animations.
  • Edited registry entry: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Mouse>MouseHoverTime from default value of 400 to 0, then 30.
  • Edited registry entry: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop>MenuShowDelay from default value of 400 to 0, then 20.
  • >>> Restarted computer after each step.

I haven't noticed any noticeable results with changing these things.

Any assistance would be much appreciated. Thank you.

You're welcome.  Let us know if a fresh install makes any difference.

I have tried both of those changes, and I haven't noticed anything distinguishable, like I remember back when I did this with XP. I'll mess around with the values a bit, but it doesn't seem to produce any difference in my experience.

    Thanks for the suggestion though.

    Hi,

Have you tried lowering the value from 30 to 10 and 20 to 0?

Thanks Smittychat, I just tried the suggestions you made, and I don't see any difference in the period of time these pop-ups occur still. Interesting... It's not a big deal, as I have found by doing the 'old fashioned' right-click > properties will give me the exact details, however this is tedious, but it does get the job done.

I'll be doing a complete reformat and reinstall of my computer shortly, and I will definitely try these suggestions again when I've got a 'fresh' computer to work on. Hopefully things will be noticeably speedier. I do have 16 GB of RAM as well, and I'm using an SSD, so I guess that's why I was so surprised at the unresponsiveness compared to an older, less powerful computer using Windows 7  - yet I would get very responsive tooltip pop-ups when hovering over folders & files. I should also say though, that this really is the only thing that I have found to be less robust than using Windows 7, I truly have found that Windows 8.1 x64 has been outstanding in so many ways. The numerous negative reviews are completely the opposite of what I have experienced with the new OS. I love it!

    Thanks for your help.

    System > Advanced System Settings

Uncheck Animations in the taskbar and Start Menu

    Click Apply, Ok, OK
