Update disk drives to SATA AHCI from IDE

I have been trying to update Windows XP PRO disk drivers. At present the system installed is IDE ATA/ATAPI and I would like to update to Intel(R) Rapid Storage Technology SATA AHCI controller. I have the drivers on a floppy disk. I create a floppy containing the following files in the root directory:

    iaAhci.inf, iaAhci.cat,

    iaStor.inf, iaStor.cat,

    iaStor.sys, and

    TxtSetup.oem

After the files were loaded the installation stopped. The system said that it could not find nvrd32.sys I have searched and found that this is a common problem but I could not find any good solution. So I went the Nvidia web site and downloaded 15.46_nforce_winxp_interational_whql and put on a floppy.

After I installed the SATA drivers I used the S to install additional drivers and installed nvrd32.sys drive or so it said. All looked like it had everything that was required and said it was going to start Windows. When it started it went to the blue screen with the same old error that will not help one bit.

I would like to know if anyone can advise me on how to install the required driver? I have tried to update my installation but that will not work so I formatted another disk and tried to install the system with the same look. When you read the procedure and follow it like I have it looks like something has been omitted or is incorrect. The system runs fine as it is setup but I would like to take advantage of the SATA AHCI controller.

Nvidia has nothing to do with intel storage....

Being you have "RAID/SATA" controller ports on the MB.1st,install SATA

hard drives, boot pc to BIOS,select SATA controller be active,"advanced chip

set"enhanced or similiar lets IDE & SATA work together, set boot priority

to SATA/RAID,exit bios,if raid, configure raid set up in menu (runs auto),boot

    to xp cd,press F6 option,install floppy when asked,run 2x,exit SATA/RAID

set up,xp takes over from that point.A new OS is a must.

Read owners manual, get floppy drivers from intel Matrix storage,DOS

Also, floppy must be formatted in DOS

It takes some patience, but the screen menu guides you, dont forget, the

hd needs to be formatted before the OS gets installed...

Also, with current hd,set BIOS as outlined, sata hd can run as slave to IDE,

just update chipset software, install windows matrix storage software

    Also,intel ICH5 SATA controller runs with older software,matrix is ICH7 & up

    Problem Solved.

I want to thank all of you for your inputs. Because of your suggestions, I took a look in the i286 folder and the NVRD32.SYS driver was there so I had to be trying to load a driver that the system did not like? I decided to try to integrate the drivers into a new system disk. This time when nLite ask what driver to integrate I selected all the Intel® 7 Series/C216 Chipset Family Controllers. After the integration was complete, the ISO was so large I had to fit it on a DVD.

The resulting disk loaded the operating system with only one small hiccup! It hung when adjusting the display. On restart the system came up and is working like a champ.

    Hello Andrew E

Thank you for your reply. I apologize for not replying sooner as I have been on the road the past 5 days. First off, I have the Intel Z77 chipset that can be set to IDE, CHCI OR RAID. When one is selected it enables the SATA controller for that mode.

When I installed XP using IDE it worked and I was delighted. As I did not have a floppy drive, I made an integrated disk using nLite to add the SATA/CHCI drives. When I tried to install it on a newly formatted disk it presented the selections and I selected Intel® Desktop/Workstation/Server Express Chipset SATA RAID Controller. Once the selection was made it stopped and said “Windows can not find nvrd32.sys. I don’t know why the system requires this drive? Later on I got a floppy drive and tried to install with the same results.

As I said before, after I installed the SATA drivers and installed nvrd32.sys drive it said it was going to start Windows. This was the first time I have been able to get this far along without installing the nvrd32.sys driver. I don’t know what to try next?

    So just to clarify,

would you have to do a "fresh reinstall" of windows XP Pro service

pack 3, if you just changed the controller from IDE to AHCI/SATA in the bios?

(without any raid configuration issues to deal with)

In other words; using a bare metal backup, could one just restore the operating system onto a

new drive after the controller was changed?

    Follow up question,

after changing to the Sata controller in bios are you aware of any

particular/common issues that would prevent using the new hybrid hard drives?
