How do I remove a game from my Windows 8 start menu that has already been uninstalled?

I have WIndows 8.1 and I recently uninstalled World of Warcraft from my PC. I noticed that a "World of Warcraft" icon is still located in my start menu under "Games". When I clicked uninstall it directed me to the control panel where the game no longer exists for me to uninstall.

So I went back to the start menu and right clicked to open the containing folder of the file and was brought to this:

From here I am unable to alter the World of Warcraft file in any way (delete or open a properties window). I am also unable to locate this "Games" (that is all it says the directory location is) folder that I am have apparently stumbled upon.

I have searched relentlessly but can't find any other mention of this directory.

What is going on and how do I get rid of this file that should no longer exist on my computer? I really hate that I can't remove it from my Start Menu. Please help :/

I have been through all the suggested recommendations above and none of them have worked.

This should be a simple right click and remove but the only option is uninstall and brings you to the control panel. The program was originally uninstall through the control panel

I have tried to use registry cleaners and disk cleaners and nothing can get rid of this dead link.

How can this dead link be removed??

Hey J smith. I think I've solved your problem. Here's what I had to do, and it was successful.

Here's the path you wanna take..

    1. Go to your C: drive.
    2. Open Program Files (x86)
    3. Open Wild Tangent Games
    4. Open Web Link - Dark Orbit (Or Mahjongg, World of Warcraft, etc.)
    5. Double click on Uninstall.
    6. Problem Solved.
    7. Thank me later ;)

Let me know if that works for you.

    Hi Smith,

Thank you for keeping us updated, let us know if uninstalling and reinstalling World of Warcraft doesn’t help we will be glad to assist you further. You may try these steps:

    Step 1:

Also check if the icon is present in the below location:

    C:\users<username>\appdata\local\Microsoft\windows\game explorer

Try deleting the file and then check for the issue.

Step 2: Follow these steps in registry window

    1. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\GameUX
    2. Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\GameUX\S-1-5-21-1024406848-2370630625-919077267-1000 (It may be something different)
    3. Browse each folder and notice the title usually under most of the binary data.
    4. Select the folder where your link is and delete it.
    5. Check "Games" to see if it is there.

**Warning:**You should create a backup of this long number subkey to be able to restore it later if you ever wanted to. Once you delete it in step 3C below it will be permanently gone.

    To create a backup:

    • In the left pane, right click on the long number subkey for the correct game name and click on Export.
    • Name the .reg file backup something to make it easy to remember what this is for.

Save the .reg file somewhere safe to have it later if needed.

Step 3: Run SFC scan before installing and uninstalling the game.

Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files

    Hope this helps.

Thank you very much for the response John!

Sadly, none of the above methods have resolved the issue.

I had already attempted methods 1 and 3 prior to posting but went through your steps again for good measure. I am left with attempting to reinstall and uninstall World of Warcraft. I will be doing that soon at a point in which I have the time to dedicate to it.

With fingers crossed, I will let you know how it goes for me.

Thanks again, it is much appreciated!

    Hi Smith,

Issues with uninstalling programs are usually caused by improper installation. Corruption or damage of the program can also lead to uninstall troubles. Follow these methods and check if it helps.

Method 1: I would suggest you to check for the World of Warcraft related files in these locations and check if you can delete it. These files are normally found in the following locations:

You can press Windows key + R and copy paste the below location to open it directly from Run command.

    *C:\Documents and Settings\Local Settings\Temp C:\Windows\Temp C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft C:\Program Files (x86)\World of Warcraft C:\Program Files\Common Files\Blizzard Entertainment C:\Users\Public\Games\World of Warcraft C:\Users\Public\Public Documents\Blizzard Entertainment\World of Warcraft*

Method 2: You can try running this Microsoft Fixit tool and check if it helps.

Note: This Fixit tool is not compatible for Windows 8.1 but you can still run it on Windows 8.1 to fix the issue. Follow these steps:

    a)      Open this Fixit link using Internet Explorer: http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall?wa=wsignin1.0

    b)      You will get the error Operating system is not supported.

    c)       Press F12 on the keyboard. This will open Developer tool.

    d)      Press CTRL key + 8, or click on Emulation icon.

    e)      Change User agent String to Internet Explorer 10.

    f)       The Fixit link will refresh and "Run Now" box will show in Green color.

    g)      Click on it and save it on your computer.

    h)      Right click on the saved fixit tool and select "Run as Administrator" and follow the on-screen instruction to fix the issue.

Method 3: Follow these steps if you are still facing the issue.

    Registry disclaimer

To do so: Important this section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs.

    1) Press Windows key + R

    2)      Type Regedit and press enter.

    3) Navigate to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Uninstall\ Warcraft III"

    4)      Delete everything inside.

    5)      Restart the computer and check.

If issue still persists, reinstall the game and uninstall it and check.

Hope this helps. If you need further assistance with Windows, let us know and will be glad to help.
