We are having a strange issue with one of our clients that we have yet to figure out and I feel like we have tried just about everything and running out of ideas. All we are trying to do is set up file shares on one of the PCs in the office (out of 5). The shares have been set up and can be accessed all the time by 3 out of the 5 computers (all 5 are running win7). The other 2 laptops (whether hard wired or running on wireless) have intermittent access to the shares. Everything will be working fine and then randomly they cant see the shares anymore and get a permissions error. Once the pc that is hosting the shares is rebooted, the 2 laptops can then again see the shares. I brought my own laptop in and it could access the shares immediately while the 2 laptops weren't able to.

What we have done so far;

  1. Gave full control to "Everyone" at the root directory of the shares
  2. Created another admin user on the host machine and gave it full control to the root directory of the shares
  3. Uninstalled antivirus on both of the laptops
  4. Checked all machines are in the same workgroup (actually created a new work group and put everyone in it after the fact)
  5. Enabled NetBIOS over TCP/IP on both machines
  6. Changed everyone's network type to "Work"
  7. Disabled router firewall
  8. Disabled Windows Firewall
  9. Cleared credential manager
  10. Changed network access in local security policy
  11. Turned on all advanced sharing options (including sharing for devices that use 40- or 56-bit encryp)

I think there were a couple other little things that we did try but changed them back because they did not make a difference. It is difficult to troubleshoot because it is intermittent, so of course 85% of the time we go out to work on them they can connect and then we are shooting in the dark.

We get either of these errors when they cant connect:

  1. The specified network name is no longer available.......
  2. \computer is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource........

Our next option is to wipe both the laptops and start them fresh, but before we do that I would like to hear if anyone else has any idea what might be going on????
