olympus digital voice recorder vn-960pc

I have the device shown above, and cannot get it to download files to my computer. I am currently running Windows 7 pro, 32 bit system (recently upgraded from Windows XP pro). The recorder worked very well with XP. I have been to the Olympus website and done their downloads to upgrade the software to their 2.1.4 level, and it did not work for me. Their customer support did not respond to two of my emails regarding the problem (obviously AWOL). I updated the drivers I found through the internet - still 'No go.'

At this point I am at a loss. Are there any ideas out there?

I am a first time user of this, so am uncertain where to find responses, if any.

    Hello Rudy,

Thank you for keeping us updated on this issue.

Apart from Ron suggestion, I would also suggest you to uninstall & re-install the drivers inWindows XP SP2 Compatibility mode:

To do so follow the steps given below:

    1. Right click on the setup file of the driver.
    2. Go to "Properties".
    3. Click on "Compatibility mode".
    4. Place a check mark in the check box against “Run this program in compatibility mode for” and from the drop down menu, choose "Windows XP SP2".
    5. Place a check mark on "Run as an Administrator" under privileges level and click on "Apply" and then click OK.
    6. Now, double click on the setup file to initiate the installation.

You can find more information about compatibility mode in the articles below:

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/What-is-program-compatibility

Hope this information is helpful. If the issue still persists, please post back for further assistance, we'll be glad to assist you.

    Thank you

HI, IF you still have not resolved your problem, I know this is 2 months after you last posted. BUT

    HERE IS THE ANSWER>>>

I have had the same problem with an Olympus VN-960PC!!

I have Windows 7 64-bit, I thought that it MIGHT read it as a storage device it does NOT! So I went to Olympus to download the software - they had a DRIVER and an UPDATE to the Original program but neither would install WITHOUT the original software already being installed. I searched Olympus for download to the original but could not find it.

BUT I FOUND THIS (through another search): A link to the OLD (2007) Original software,

    1. Click on link below->

    http://www.olympusamerica.com/files/DigitalWavePlayer.zip

      That should start the download

    1. After download is finished INSTALL the software. You can go ahead and use it or you can update it from version 2.1.0 (2007) to the latest version 2.1.4 (2010).  I installed and it installs a driver, then it worked for me, just fine. BUT I DID UPDATE mine as well, did not see a big difference though?
    2. For UPDATING Software Program and for a Driver download - follow the links below...

You will see two downloads, first is the UPDATE and the second is a DRIVER for the VN-960PC: Digital Wave Player Update 2.1.4   and

VN-PC Series Driver for 64-bit editions of Windows Vista and Windows 7

IF you have a problem with the links in #3. THIS will take you to the Olympus webpage for these download:

    Best of Luck,  RonL

    Amit,

    Here is an update.

I have tried your Method number two - no difference. I am still unable to transfer files to computer. I checked Microsoft site for updates. None were available for my system.

I am at a loss as to what I could do next.

    Regards,

    Amit

Thank you for replying to my post.

I had started a reply, but it winked out on me. Let me begin again.

The machine I am working on is a Dell OptiPlex 380 which has been upgraded from 1 Gig to 2 Gigs of RAM. It is running an Intel Core 2, Dual CPU. It is a 32 bit machine. As you already know, I recently up graded from Windows XP Pro to Windows 7 Pro.

Yes, the device shows up in device manager as VNUSB Device; VN Series Device.

No error message appears at any time - The software simply does not allow a download of any files on the recorder.

When the voice recorder is first plugged in to computer a small window opens which allows access to a rather limited array of functions with the files - downloading of files (wave files), editing file names, deleting files, etc. Then when 'file download' is selected another small window opens which give a graphic representation of the download process to indicate that a download is in progress. This is when things are working correctly.

What I have experienced with the Windows 7 software is that the device is recognized, the first window opens, however when the download (or file transfer as the recorder software calls it) option is called for nothing happens - no error message, no download.

Yes, I have tried a different USB port. I moved from a port in the back of the computer to one in front.

I have tried Method one (above) but have not yet attempted Method two - uninstall all voice recorder software and reload - but it is still early (9:55 a.m.) on a Monday.  I will give that a go next.

Thank you again for responding to my post. I will keep you posted as to results.

    Regards,

    Rudy HHemmann

    Hello Rudy,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community Forum.

As per the description I understand that you are not able to transfer the data from Olympus digital voice recorder vn-960pc to the computer. This might be an issue if the drivers & software are no updated correctly. However, let’s work together to get this problem resolved.

Before we proceed I would require some more information to assist you better.

    1. What is make and model of the computer?

    2. Is Olympus digital voice recorder showing in the Device Manager?

    1. What is the exact error message you receive, when you try to connect the Olympus digital voice recorder with your computer?
    2. Have you tried to connect the Olympus digital voice recorder on a different USB port?

You may disconnect all USB devices and then perform the following methods:

    Method 1:

You may run the Microsoft fixit & check if the issue persists.

Hardware devices are not working or are not detected in Windows

    http://support.microsoft.com/mats/hardware_device_problems/en-us

    Method 2:

Sometimes proper drivers do not get detected after the initial installation so reinstallation of the drivers helps resolve the issues.

I would suggest you to uninstall VN-960pc both software and driver from Windows and then reinstall the software and driver from the manufacture website.

To do so follow the steps given below:

    Step 1:

Uninstall the Digital Wave Player Update 2.1.4 from the Control Panel/programs.

    Refer the link:

    1. Click on Start and in Start search box type in "Device Manager" and press Enter.
    2. In Device Manager Window will be open.
    3. Look for the Digital Voice Recorder device under USB [Universal Serial bus] host controller,****

right click on it and select Uninstall.

    1. After uninstalling the driver, restart the computer.
    2. Now, try to re-install VN-960pc driver & software from the manufacture website.

    Refer the link:
