Windows 8.1 Activation - Error Code 0xC004F074 - No KMS Service is contacted

I have bought Windows 8 machine around 1 year back and upgraded to Windows 8.1, 2 months back (when it was rolled out on Windows store for free). It was running perfectly fine until last week.

From last week I am getting an error while activating Windows with error code 0xC004F074 and error description as

"The software licensing service reported that product could not be activated. No key management service (KMS) could be contacted. Please see application event log for more details."

I got windows preloaded on my machine by Lenovo and they are not able to provide me Windows Key as it comes on BIOS by default, so I am not able to manually activate key.

I have visited Microsoft support page http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2885698/en-us for downloading hotfix for KMS but not able to download any fix and keeps on getting message "Not Suitable for this PC".

Can somebody please let me know how should I connect to correct KMS server. My PC seems to have volume license (not sure if this is same as having keys on BIOS). Pasting output of slmgr / dlv command which I used to check if my PC is connecting to correct KMS server.

    Hi,

Easy fix as KoenC posted above. Solved same problem for me. Only thing I'll add is that you go to Philip Yip's site and follow steps for figuring out your embedded BIOS product key by using RWeverything program. After this just enter it into the activate windows screen and works like a charm, no more annoying error activation messages!

    Link above or: http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/a-clean-install-of-windows/microsoft-product-activation/obtaining-your-oem-bios-embedded-slp-product-key-using-rw-everything-oem-only/

You don't need to watch video either, just follow written instructions, that easy.

    Good luck!

    Hi Khalidjan,

I apologize for the delay in response. I can understand the inconvenience you are facing with activation. However, this is designed such way to prevent piracy. When you purchase Microsoft Windows, you get the product key which can be used to activate Windows on you system multiple times. If the system was pre-installed with Windows, the computer manufacturer company provides the product key for activation.

You may refer to the following Microsoft help article and try to activate Windows using the phone activation process.

    Hope this information was helpful.

    Hey

I have this problem to. I also have a laptop now for a few months with windows 8.1 and suddenly it said that it isn't activated anymore. The hotfix also didn't work for me so I really want to find a solution to.

I keep seeing this same BS answer.  I have recently (unfortunately?) bought an HP notebook with Win 8, saw the message from your store app constantly telling me I can upgrade for free to win 8.1 and I find now that it will not activate.  Further, there is no key provided to me as it's now embedded in the motherboard.  So I am stuck now with a supposedly free upgrade that will not activate.

The KMS fix will not install on my computer either.

    How about a real solution?

    Hi Sharief,

Thanks for responding, but I am really not getting the problem solved. Can you please let me know the exact resolution steps. I tried installing hotfix already but nothing is working for windows 8.1 even time syncing command is not working.

    Thanks,

    Sandeep
