    Unfortunately HP has not released Windows 8x drivers for this scanner model. The latest available drivers are for Windows Vista.

    As a last resort you can try installing the latest drivers in Compatibility Mode.

    1. Download the latest driver for Windows and place it on your Desktop.
    2. Right click the driver installation file and select Properties / Compatibility Tab.
    3. Place a check mark in the Run this program in compatibility mode for.
    4. In the drop down menu, select Windows 8.
    5. Click Apply /OK.
    6. Right click the installation file and select the Run As Administrator option to install.

    I have managed to get my 3970 working using compatibility mode but I had to select XP not Windows 8

    You cannot use this model on windows 8 and compatibility mode doesn't work. Buy a new all in one printer-scanner. Stand alone scanners did not work with win 7 either.
