Wireless Network Connection doesn't have a valid IP configuration

I just moved, and switched Internet providers. Since I've had this new provider (Brighthouse), my laptop will not keep a stable internet connection. It will work perfectly, then within a few hours the connection will be lost. I have to troubleshoot/repair it, and I get the message "Wireless Network connection does not have a valid IP configuration." Then it works fine again. Few hours later, same thing. I thought it was just when connected wirelessly, but the other night the same thing happened when plugged directly into the modem. "Local Area Connection does not have a valid IP configuration." This same laptop worked perfectly when I had a different internet provider (Verizon) and modem a few months ago. I have called Brighthouse numerous times, had 3 techs to the house and have a 4th one scheduled for Sunday but they don't seem to understand what I'm talking about and they obviously aren't fixing the problem. All they do is tell me the signal strength is fine, and they leave. 2 hours later I have no internet again. Even I have figured out that is not the root of the problem. I need someone who understands computers/networks to help me. This has also happened on 2 different models of Brighthouse modems. They thought maybe my laptop didn't like their brand new, top of the line modem so they switched it out for an older model....same exact problem. This was never a problem until I switched to this new internet service, so something must not have been configured correctly when the service was set up. PLEASE HELP! I have online classes that I can't even do at home because of this. I've done my own research and know that the following cmd info is required. I ran it once when the internet was connected, and once when the connection was lost, and it was identical, if that matters/helps....

The fact that your network only shows the bars with no shield means that it IS encrytped -- which is consistent with your having to type in your password.

The possible causes of this problem appear to be:

    1. A firewall or other security software on your computer blocking outgoing connections
    2. Malware on your computer blocking outgoing connections
    3. Security settings on your router blocking your computer

    So ...

What is the name and version of your antivirus program?

What other security software is installed on your computer?

What is the make and model of your router?

Given your statement that all of this started when you switched Internet providers and got a new modem/router, I'm inclined to believe that the problem is in your router.  I'm not confident that I can find a solution for you if the ISP techs couldn't (presumably, they are familiar with the modem/routers supplied by their own company), but if you identify the make and model of the router, I'll see if I can come up with something.  Otherwise, I'm sorry to say that I'm out of ideas.

Yes, I did the numbered steps.

I could not find the encryption setting in the router configuration utility, so it was just on the computer. The network shows just the bars. The problem just happened again, through the Local Area Connection (plugged directly into the modem)

    1.  Did you read -- and follow -- the numbered steps I added at the top of my earlier Reply?

    2.  Your ipconfig results look a lot better than before.

    3.  Does

When I changed the Security Type to No Authentication, I also changed the "Encryption type" to "None."

refer to changes you made on your computer (rather than in the router's configuration utility)?  I assume it does, and if so, although you couldn't find anything enabled about encryption in your router's configuration utility, the fact that you were asked for a wifi password means that encryption was still enabled.  When you click on the wifi icon to see available wireless networks, does your network show a shield icon or just the bars:

That ipconfig information is the same for when there is a connection, and when there's not.

I managed to get into the router configuration utility, but couldn't find a specific wireless encryption setting. Everything that mentioned encryption was already disabled. When I changed the Security Type to No Authentication, I also changed the "Encryption type" to "None." I was able to connect to my wireless network, but it still asked for my password. Not sure if it matters. Here is the ipconfig...no Autoconfiguration...

You don't indicate whether you believe that the ipconfig information you provided is when you have a usable Internet connection or not.

EDIT -- Before doing the steps below, do the following numbered steps

    1. Open an Elevated Command Prompt (search for cmd.exe then right-click on the link and "Run as administrator -- comply with the UAC prompt)
    2. Type the following commands in the Command Prompt window and press Enter after each line
      • netsh winsock reset catalog
      • netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log
      • netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log
    3. Reboot the computer

    Now continue with the following

That ipconfig information shows that you are NOT properly connected to the modem/router.  The IP address for your wireless adapter

         Autoconfiguration IPv4 Address. . : 169.254.247.50(Preferred)

is what's called an "Automatic Private IP Addressing" (APIPA) address, and this is what Windows assigns when the adapter (wired or wireless) is configured to obtain an IP address automatically (the usual default) but for some reason is unable to obtain an IP address.

The usual reason for this -- for wireless connections -- is misconfigured wireless encryption.  To test this, connect a computer to your modem/router with an Ethernet cable and access the router's web configuration utility.  Find the setting for wireless encryption and completely disable it (this will only be temporary).  If you don't know how to do this, provide the make and model of your router and I'll try to find a manual for it.

After you have turned off encryption in the router, open the Network and Sharing Center on your computer and click the link to "Manage Wireless Networks."  At the Manage Wireless Networks screen, double-click your network to open its "Properties" page and click the "Security" tab.  Change the "Security type" to "No authentication (open)" and OK your way out.

Now see if you can connect.  Assuming you can connect, run the ipconfig /all command again, and this time the you should see something like the following for your wireless LAN adapter -- note the two lines in bold below.  Please report what you see for "IPv4 Address" and that it does NOT have the word "Autoconfiguration" before it.

     Connection-specific DNS Suffix  . :
