What is the Haali Media Splitter.  I have found it on my computer a couple of times but have never downloaded.  I will remove and it will return and visible on the start menu as frequent use and then in programs.  I noticed the publisher is a Mike M. name.  It does not sound legitmate. Doesn't seem to work with Windows 7.  It casued my wireless printer to stop working and showed errors after it reinstalled itself.

Any information on the Haali Media Splitter would be appreciated.  What is it?  Which computer companies use it as software installed or updated.

 Thank You.

Haali Media Splitter, also known as Matroska Splitter, is a tool for separating the video and audio streams within a video file. It is often used by freeware video software, and may be automatically installed by that software when it is installed. Unless it (like any software) has been hacked it is perfectly safe, and will do nothing unless you or certain video software accesses it.

Here is a link to it in VideoHelp:

    http://www.videohelp.com/tools/Haali-Media-Splitter

and here is the parent web site:

    http://haali.su/mkv/

You may uninstall it, but then the software that uses it will not work properly.

Vgefox is right to be cautious about software that got installed and you know nothing about. It is a pity that some authors of software don't make it clear what other software gets installed at the same time. As Ned Kelly said just before they hanged him, "Such is life".

    Hi,

I would suggest you to find information about the Haali Media Splitter here:

    http://haali.su/mkv/

If you want to remove the program, I would suggest you to follow the steps provided here:

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Uninstall-or-change-a-program

Since the program has reinstalled itself, you may want to use the Microsoft Safety Scanner to see if it can find or remove any malware on the system:

I did a scan via Kaspersky and the files were negative as a threat.

The Haali splitter is a tool used by the K Lite codec pack for Windows Media Player.

since I do not work in IT and am not an expert in computer terminology. Would you please explain in plain language what the "splitter" does and why it might be useful to me? It would be appreciated.

The program itself is one of a list of items that self installs without gaining the consent of the user. It isn't a virus so most scanners will not recognize it as such at first. You can uninstall it by going to control panel then using add/remove program but this does not solve the problem. This program is almost similar to Browser Hijackers in which it can root itself into your computer's registry files so that if you did delete it. Well it can install itself again. If you do not remove that information it placed into your registry or have a professional remove it for you then it the process will continue. Honestly if the program was not on your computer the day you bought it then it does not belong. I was just cleaning out the registry of  laptop that was severely infected with various forms of benign or malicious items. Most of which was Browser Hijackers that does exactly as it says and it sends information as to what you do online back to its host. It changes you browsers start page to something that you never set it to. Worse case is so much things that is bad for your computer and how it functions are accidentally downloaded by the user or someone else using the computer.  However as I have stated there are some that will attach itself without knowledge to the user until long after. If you are not sure of what it is look it up.

I deal with computers daily and assists others with the things that can go wrong.  Trust me that program did not come with your computer but it can bring with it more trouble then you need. Also as I have noticed that this problem is happening to people with windows 7 or windows 8 installed. I'm running XP and Vista.
