I have the CD's for the Heroes of Might and Magic 3 series and have been able to install it on previous versions of Windows, 98, XP, Vista and Win 7, but am unable to install it in Win 8 and it is very frustrating. The User Access asks me whether I want to proceed with running the install file but then nothing happens and no error messages are displayed. Can you please explain why this is so and what I can do to correct the problem. We have been playing this game for many years and wish to do so for the forseable future and want to have it installed on our latest computer.

Regards

Paul

Hi, I was experiencing the same problem installing on my Surface Pro win 8 64bit. Going direct to the CD drive _setup and running the setup.exe with compatibility mode and administrator rights did not help at all. In the end I got it to work by restarting into safe mode, then going into the CD\_setup\setup.exe and running the file without any compatibility mode or admin rights, and it works. After installation, restart into normal windows, go into install directory, right click on heroes3.exe and select compatibility run as administrator+XP SP2 mode. Now everything works perfect.

I have similar problem with Heros of M&M 3. I can install and play for a while. At first, it was an hour or more; then program crashes.

Now as I continue to play, it only plays for shorter and shorter times. Most recently  less than 5 minutes.

I hope someone [from MS] is still watching.

This first 64 bit machine I have had, compatibility mode just freezes up, while checking.

    Hi Pkwilko,

Thank you for choosing Windows 8 and we are happy that you have posted your query on Microsoft Community Forums. We are here to help you out with this issue.

As per the description, you are not able to install the game Heroes of Might and Magic 3 series on your Windows 8 PC.  This seems to be a compatibility issue with the Windows 8.

I have checked the compatibility details of this game in the Windows Compatibility Center and it does not show the 3 series of this game. It is only showing the game “Heroes of Might and Magic V” as compatible with Windows 8.

You can check it from this link:

    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/compatibility/win8/CompatCenter/ProductViewerWithDefaultFilters?TempOsid=win8&Locale=en-us&TextSearch=heroes%2Bof%2Bmight%2Band%2Bmagic&Type=Both&CurrentPage=0&TotalPages=1&ShowCriteria=0&SortCriteria=Relevance&Compatibility=Unknown&LastRequested=14

As you have mentioned in your description that you were able to install and play the game without any issues in the previous versions of Windows, let’s try installing the game in the Windows 7 compatibility mode on Windows 8 and check the issue.

Install the game in Windows 7 Compatibility Mode.

For installing the game in the Windows 7 compatibility mode, try the following method.

Download the setup file of the game and save it on your computer and then run the program compatibility troubleshooter or manually choose the compatibility settings by following the instructions from this link:

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/older-programs-compatible-version-windows

If changing the compatibility settings doesn't fix the issue, I would suggest you to contact the manufacturer of the game to see if there's an update for the program and for further assistance.

Hope this information is helpful. Please do not hesitate to get back to us for any issues with Windows in the future. We’ll be glad to help you with it.
