Wireless can't connect to some wifi networks but can to others

Hi,

So I'm having trouble with computer not connecting to some wi-fi networks. It connects to some (it's on my work one now, and connected to my previous home network), but it doesn't connect to others (specifically my current home network. Previously this wasn't a problem because it worked with all of the networks I use most of the time, but now it won't connect to my home one.

Anyway, it's definitely my computer, as other people can connect their devices, and I can connect my phone to the wifi which my computer can't connect to. The troubleshooter doesn't find anything wrong with my computer's wi-fi connection (although recently it's started crashing when I ask it to work out what's wrong with my connection. the computer can see the networks - it'll ask for the password, I put them in definitely correctly (same one as my phone, which connects), but instantly says that it can't connect (and asks me to troubleshoot, says no problem).

I've restored it to various times in its history, but nothing doing. I've also cleared all other networks, again, no change. Didn't want to do a full system restore et al without trying other things, but am at a bit of a loss at this point.

Help?

Thanks!

    Hi Elspeth,

Usually this issue is caused if there are any changes happened to the Network Adapter settings or due to any third party firewall that is blocking the computer to connect to other networks. I would like to know some information about this issue so that we could assist you further.

    1. Which third party security software/firewall is installed on your computer?
    2. Do you get any error code or error message while trying to connect to networks?
    3. Have you made any changes to the computer prior to this issue?

I suggest you to try the following methods and check if it works for you.

    Method 1:

Try the steps in the following Microsoft Help article and check if it helps. This article consists of steps troubleshoot problems with connecting to a network.

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/cant-connect-to-network#1TC=windows-7

    Method 2:

Try the steps in the following Microsoft Help article to troubleshoot wired or wireless network related problems and check.

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/network-connection-problem-help#network-problems=windows-81&v1h=win81tab1&v2h=win7tab1&v3h=winvistatab1&v4h=winxptab1

    Method 3:

Disable Firewall temporarily and check if the issue persists. This is to check if the issue is caused due to firewall blocking the connection or not.

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/turn-windows-firewall-on-off#turn-windows-firewall-on-off=windows-7

Disclaimer: Antivirus software/Firewall can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you should not disable your antivirus software/firewall. If you do have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you are connected to the Internet or a network during the time your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

Please reply with the status of the issue so that we can help you better.

    Hi,

I had already tried the steps you gave. In reply to your queries:

    1. Kaspersky Lab
    2. It doesn't give me an 'error' message as such, it just says it can't connect to the network (invited me to troubleshoot, which I do, finds nothing wrong, or alternatively the troubleshooter crashes)
    3. Nope. Not a single thing.

    Hi Basith,

The new user account fixed the error. Any idea what profile setting would make this happen, because I really don't remember changing them at all?

    Thanks,

Just to be clear I went through all of the above steps (except installing a new network adapter. nothing doing)

    Hi Basith,

The troubleshooter doesn't think there's anything wrong with the network adapter, and all of the drivers are up to date.

    Thanks
