I received an email about licensing. I'm not sure if it's legit or not. It's asking a lot of detailed questions about licensing and the network. The email starts out ...

"Microsoft would like to work with your organization on a review of your Microsoft licenses. This review process will be undertaken with all customers over a period of time and is intended to help you control your software assets. The steps in the review process are as follows: ...."

There are three attachments and it's asking us to fill out a spreadsheet called... Deployment Summary English.xls

Is this legit???

Thanks for your help.

I get calls from someone every few weeks with the same intention.  Also lots of emails.  In my opinion, this is a high pressure sales tactic.  It's to the point where I've blocked the person's email and they still keep calling.  This is really leaving a bad taste in my mouth about Microsoft.

After further investigation, I found this to be legit.   At least as legit as far as I can verify.  The person I dealt with had access to our license usage which I'm pretty sure only Microsoft would have access to.  In any case, I performed all of the license gathering information that they wanted and I was never asked to buy anything or to give out any information that I would consider to be a security problem.  If you go through this, expect a lot of follow up emails asking you to clarify potential licensing issues that they find.   After it was all said and done, my company was found to be in compliance with our licensing and we got an official verification from them.  It was a good exercise for me to get a good handle on our position with Microsoft licensing.

My guess is that is that things will be much more difficult for you if you do not respond to these messages.

Were you asked to send in any reports for the Microsoft MAP tool?

You can confirm the legitimacy of Microsoft SAM by asked the SAM rep to provide a snapshot of your Volume License purchase history.  The SAM rep should be able to provide you with a sample that includes the details of at least one of your Volume License agreements.  Only Microsoft would have this detail and it makes it easy to match and confirm against your own records.

    In my opinion, no.
