    Hi Arnaud,

Glad to know that you have resolved the issue. We really appreciate your effort to resolve the issue.

I am sorry to hear that you are facing issues with the CD drive of the computer. If

there is a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in it, then it indicates

that there are some issues with the hardware or drivers. I suggest you to try the following steps and check if it helps.

What is the make and model of the computer?

Method 1: Run the Hardware Troubleshooter

The Hardware Troubleshooter is an automated tool which checks the hardware connected to the computer for any known issues and provides the details on how to fix them. Follow these steps to run the troubleshooter.

    a) Press “Windows Logo” + “W” keys from the keyboard.

    b) Type “Troubleshooting” in the search bar and press “Enter”.

    c) In the “Troubleshooting” window, click on “View All” on the left pane.

    d) Click on “Hardware and Devices”.

    e) Click on “Advanced” and then click on “Run as Administrator”.

    f) Click “Next” and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the troubleshooting process.

Please check the troubleshooting report and share the details with us. You may also try the suggestions given by the troubleshooter and check if that resolves the issue. If that doesn’t help, then try the next method.

Method 2: Uninstall and Reinstall the Drivers

    Uninstall the Device Drivers

    a) Press “Windows Logo” + “X” keys on the keyboard.

    b) Click on “Device Manager” from that list.

    c) Search for the DVD Drive from the device list, right click on it and then select “Uninstall”. On the un-installation window, if you have an option: “Delete the driver software for this device”  you may select that and then remove the corrupted drivers from the computer.

    d) Follow the on-screen instructions to complete it and the restart the computer if prompted.

After the restart, please open the Device Manager again and then click on the “Scan for hardware changes” button. Check if Windows 8.1 detects the DVD Drive and installs an appropriate driver automatically.

    Hope this helps.

Please post back if the issue persists and we will be glad to assist you further.

    Hello,

Since last time, i've uninstalled Daemon Tools and Alcohol, and the native Windows option "Mount" has appeared (i don't remenber seeing it before installing Daemon Tools).

After a lot of unsuccessful attempts to mount the disk image, restarts and others little things, it finally worked !

But i've discover that my (real) drive doesn't work neither. When i put in a CD, it turns, but nothing happens in "My PC" and it is not discoverable. I checked the status in the device manager, and there is a little yellow caution sign one the drive in the device manager list.

Moreover, i tried to add a VHD drive like you adviced, but the option is grey in the menu, and it can't click it.

Does my information help you ?

    (Sorry for my broken english)

    Best regards,

    Arnaud GROUSSRAD

    Hi,

Thank you for posting your query on this forum. I’ll try my best to assist you with this issue.

I understand that you are facing issues creating virtual drives on the computer. Windows features the capability to create a virtual disk drive. A virtual disk drive is a special folder of an actual physical drive that actually serves as a drive in its own right. You can, for example, create a virtual CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive in Windows. A key advantage of a virtual drive is that it usually saves time. A virtual CD drive, for example, can be read much faster than a physical CD drive because it exists on the hard drive.

    1. Do you get any error message when you are trying to install these software on the computer?
    2. Which version of Alchohol 120% and Daemon tools are you using?
    3. Can you install other programs\software on the computer?

You can refer to the following links to check the compatibility of different version of these software with Windows 8.1.

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/compatibility/CompatCenter/ProductViewerWithDefaultFilters?TempOsid=Windows%208.1&Locale=en-us&Architecture=X64&TextSearch=alcohol%2B120%2525&Type=Both&CurrentPage=0&TotalPages=1&ShowCriteria=0&SortCriteria=Relevance&Compatibility=Unknown&LastRequested=14

You can try the following steps if you need to create a virtual drive on your computer.

    1. Press Windows key + X and type diskmgmt.mscm
    2. In the left pane and click "Create VHD." Follow the onscreen prompts to create a virtual drive.
    3. Right-click the new drive and click "Initialize Disk." Then click "OK."
    4. Right-click the new drive again and click "New Simple Volume." Follow the onscreen prompts. Once that setup is finished, your virtual drive is ready for use.
    5. Close your Registry Editor and restart your PC.

If you find the version of software are not compatible with Windows 8.1, then you can go ahead and install those software in compatibility mode and check if it helps.

You can follow the link given below to install the software in compatibility mode.
