Windows 8.1 crashing constantly

Like the title says, after updating to 8.1, I've found Windows to be extremely unstable, it will seemingly crash sooner or later, regardless to what I'm doing.

When I try to Refresh the computer via the installation DVD, I get the error message "The drive where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again."

I've tried doing a format and reinstall and I'm seemingly able to refresh fine from vanilla Windows 8, but once again, when I reinstalled 8.1 the same error message shows up.

It should be worth noting that my setup is fairly basic, nothing complicated. I only have one SATA hard drive with one partition on, which is about 4 months old, and I'm not seeing any signs that it's failing.

Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks!

Windows 8.1 is factory installed on many brand new computers with out any of these problems of crashing. Some of the problem is that home conditions of installation are not Factory conditions. There are a lot of variables at home or outside the factory. That is likely what is messing it up. Some of the variables are bios settings. One big problem is One partition. Windows 8 has to have an uefi bios firmware on its own hidden partition. This solves a ton of problems. If the bios settings are wrong, nothing in windows can fix it. Exact Bios firmware updates are often required. Some software and hardware are perfect by them selves, but fail to play together until software updates are made. A seasoned old professional will start with hardware first. Microsoft requires hardware testing on refurbished or recycled computers before installing any windows. Very few searches on the internet talk about hardware or bios settings before installing windows. Bios is a critical piece of windows functioning. Many settings need to be changed on an old computer. Hd controller set to ahci and not ide. Turn off all ports that will never be used such as serial and lpt ports. Video aperture ram size. On and on the list goes.

What would make and model have to do with anything, you shouldnt send out an update if it doesnt work right, since i have installed my new board and cpu i can no longer right click on the desktop.  not being able to install essentials is just another reason to steer clear of windows anymore, i dont even have half the problems with things using linux mint, which is strange dont you think considering you are supposed to be the rolls royce of oses.  i just wanted to be able to use something i paid money to use, it is insane that instead of just being able to give us answers, you could quit reading from a script and help us out.

Crashing means you have to spend at least 5 hours for the computer to recover after returning to factory mode and so forth, I am sure you have plenty of examples and questions asking for your help through the whole crashing series. Just admit it is a failure.

How many people have to complain about windows 8.1 and 8 for you to admit it doesn't preform correctly? It reminds me of Obama Care and that whole fiasco, but at least they are trying to fix the problem and not denying that it is A PROBLEM>!!!

    Hi,

It would be great if you can provide more information regarding this issue. Please answer these questions for a better understanding:

    1)       What is the make and model of your computer?

    2)       What exactly do you mean by “Windows 8.1 crashing”? Does the computer restarts unexpectedly with a blue screen error on the screen?

    3)       Do you get any error message/code when this occurs on the computer?

    4)       Did you install the latest device drivers for all the devices on the computer after updating to Windows 8.1?

    5)       Do you have any third party security program installed on the computer?

If the computer restarts unexpectedly, then it could be due to the Blue Screen error. The Blue Screen error occurs when a serious problem causes Windows 8.1 to shut down or restart unexpectedly. There are multiple reasons why this type of errors occurs on the computer. They usually happen when there are some driver issues on the computer. However, it might also be due to some other software/hardware reasons. You may try these basic troubleshooting methods and check if that helps.

Method 1: Disconnect all the unnecessary external devices connected to the computer (except the mouse and the keyboard)

If you have any unnecessary external device connected to the computer, then disconnect them (except the mouse and the keyboard) from the computer and check if you still face this issue. This is to check if the issue is caused by any external devices connected to the computer.

You may also try updating the drivers for all the devices on the computer to their latest Windows 8.1 compatible versions and check if the issue persists.

Method 2: Update the Device Drivers on the Computer.

Step 1: Check the Windows updates for any latest driver updates.

Check in Windows updates if any driver updates are available. If so, install the same and check if it helps.

    a)       Press “Windows Logo” + “W” keys from the keyboard.

    b)       Type “Updates” in the search bar and click on “Install optional updates” from the left pane.

    c)       From the “Windows Update” window, click on “Check for Updates” on the top left corner, to receive a fresh list of updates and then install all the updates listed there.

For any issues while installing Windows Updates, you may also refer to this link:

    ***Troubleshoot problems with installing updates***

If no driver updates are available via Windows Update, then you may install them from the Computer Manufacturer’s website.

Step 2: Update Driver Software from the Manufacturer’s website:

Go to the computer or device manufacturer’s website and search for the latest Windows 8.1 compatible drivers available for all the devices on the computer and then install them by following the instructions given in the website.

Hope this is helpful. Please get back to us with the results.
