Mic not working on computer Windows 8.1?

Hello,

I'm having problems getting sound to playback when I record. I have a Samsung Series 3, 64b computer with Windows 8.1. I checked my devices (speakers, mic and handset) all is green checked. My mic shows that it is recording; green lines are moving. I tried recording on vocaroo.com and no sound plays back. The only other device I have attached to my computer is MagicJack (TigerJet) for the phone handset. Not sure what's going on.

Thanks,

Elda

    Hello Elda,

Thank you for keeping us updated on the issue.

As you have tried most of the troubleshooting steps, here are a few more methods which you can perform.

    Method 1: Follow these steps:

    a. Close all back applications, especially, Sound Recorder or other multimedia applications.

    b. At Windows Start Tile screen, move the cursor or touch lower right screen & bring out the "Search" function.

    c. At the "Search" panel, look for "Control Panel" and then launch it.

    d. At the "Control Panel", look for "Sound" and then launch it.

    e. Click on the Recording tab.

    f. Select the recording source, for example, Line In 2/Mic 2, and then click Set Default. Recording device will be marked with a green tick mark.

    g. Adjust the input level if you have difficulty recording. Click Properties, and then click on Levels.

**Method 2:**If the issue still persists, then I would suggest you to reinstall the driver and check. Refer to these steps:

    a)      Press Windows key + X, select device manager.

    b)      Locate the Audio adapter, right click and select properties.

    c)       Click on the driver tab and click uninstall to uninstall the current driver.

    d)      Now, restart the computer and Windows will load the generic audio driver for the computer.

    e)      Check if you face the same issue with the Windows generic drivers.

    f)       If yes, download and install the latest audio driver.

    g)      Now, right click on the audio adapter and select “Scan for hardware changes”.

Now, check if the issue persists.

Hope this information is helpful. Please do let us know the result, we’ll be glad to assist you.

    Thank you.

    Hi Elda,

Welcome to Microsoft community forums. I would appreciate if you could answer the following questions:

    1. Does the issue occur only while recording from vocaroo.com website?
    2. Which web browser are you using
    3. Do you get any error message?
    4. Are you using inbuilt or external microphone?

You may face this issue if audio setting are faulty. To fix this problem, use the following methods in the order in which they are listed. After each method, check if problem is fixed. If the problem is not fixed, try the next method.

Method 1: First, I would suggest you to check if microphone works using Sound Recorder app. Sound Recorder is an app you can use to record audio for up to three hours per recording file.

Also try adjusting the microphone volume and check. Refer to section “How can I adjust the microphone volume?”.

If issue persist, proceed to next method.

Method 2: I would suggest you to check if audio device is disabled. Follow the steps:

    1. Press Windows + X key in the Windows desktop and click Control Panel.
    2. Open the Control Panel. (Classic View)
    3. Click on the Sound icon.
    4. Click on the Recording tab.

NOTE: This will also work in the Playback tab, but there are usually not any hidden audio devices there.

    1. Right click on an empty area and click on Show Disabled Devices.
    2. You will now see the disabled audio devices with the arrow pointing down on them.

NOTE: These audio devices will vary depending on the installed audio card or chip you have.

    1. Right click on each listed disabled audio device that you want to enable and click on Enable.
    2. You will now see this when the audio devices are enabled.

NOTE: You can now change the properties settings on these audio devices to how you want them.

    1. Click OK to close the Sound window.

If issue persist, proceed to next method.

Method 3: Run the Play Audio troubleshooter and check if the issue persists.

Follow the steps to run the troubleshooter:

    1. Press Windows key + C on your keyboard to show the Charms bar.
    2. Type Troubleshooting and click Troubleshooting under Settings.
    3. Now type Play audio in the search option.
    4. Click on Play audio troubleshooter to run the troubleshooter.

If issue occurs only on vocaroo.com then you need to contact their support site or refer to the help section from their website.

Hope this helps. If you need further assistance with Windows, let us know and will be glad to help.

    Hi John,

One more thing, when I go into the Control Panel/Sound/Record, and talk, the green lines of the Mic respond by going up and down. My voice is registering, but not recording.

Sorry for all the random emails!

    Elda

    Hi John,

    I tried your other suggestions.

The Sound Recorder app works just fine. It recorded and played back.

I also troubleshooted the Play Audio. It said my Blue Tooth has a driver issue problem: Not fixed.   I tried Record Audio, same thing. I don't use Blue Tooth anyway.

    What next?

    Elda

    Hi John,

I apologize for the delayed response. In answer to your questions:

    1. I tried recording on Soundcloud also, nothing records there either.
    2. I'm using Mozilla Firefox and also tried IE; no luck.
    3. No error msgs., just silence.
    4. Inbuilt mic.

I also looked up any disabled devices and this is what I found "Stereo mix Realtek High Definition Audio" was disabled. I enabled it, but it didn't make a difference (didn't think it would).

This is all I've done. I'll try the other suggestions as well.

    Thanks ~
