Original Title: file: \BCD Error code: 0xc0000034

your PC needs to be repaired

the boot configuration data file is missing some required information.

file: \BCD

Error code: 0xc0000034

you'll need to use the recovery tools on your installation media. If you don't have any installation media (like a disc or USB device), contact your system administrator or PC manufacturer.

press esc for uefi firmware settings.

If I try to do:

bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup I get the message :

The store export operation has failed.

The requested system device cannot be found.

I can also do the Bootrec /scanos or whatever and this pops up:

Successfully scanned Windows installations.

Total identified Windows installations: 1

[1] C:\Windows

Add installation to boot list? Yes<Y>/No<N>/All<A>:y

The requested system device cannot be found.

Also I have the Windows 8.1 re-installation Disc and 25 digit product key and after trying to use it, it tells me the following:

The computer started using the Windows installation media. Remove the installation media and restart your computer so that windows starts normally. Then, insert the installation media and restart the upgrade.

(the problem with the above mentioned instructions is that I cannot do anything but get into my uefi firmware settings)

Also don't tell me to try to do the Automatic repair process because I don't have that option I have a "startup repair" option that every time I use it it says Startup Repair couldn't repair your PC.:

Please help me, I am absolutely stuck, I even tried to factory reset it after going through like 3 hours of trouble and it says something about a partition or something.(I really don't want to factory reset it if at all possible).

    Hi,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Community.

Sorry to know that you are unable to boot your system and getting BCD error code 0xc0000034. I appreciate the troubleshooting steps you have tried so far.

To get a clear understanding of this issue, I need some more information:

    1. What is the make and model of your computer?
    2. Did you make any changes on your computer prior to this issue?

This issue occurs when the Windows Boot Manager (Bootmgr) entry is not present in the Boot Configuration Data (BCD) store or if the Boot\BCD file on the active partition is damaged or missing. You can repair the boot file by running the few command in the command prompt of the Windows recovery.

As a workaround, I suggest you to follow the method below:

Let’s rebuilt BCD ( Boot Configuration Data):

Boot into the Windows 8.1 disc.

After selecting your language, time and keyboard settings, click Next to load the next window, then click on the Repair your computer link on the bottom left corner of the window.

    Click on Troubleshoot.

Click on Advanced options to get into Automatic Repair menu.

Click on command prompt and type in the following commands, one after the other:

    • bootrec /RebuildBcd
    • bootrec /fixMbr
    • bootrec /fixboot
    • bootsect /nt60 SYS
    • bootsect /nt60 ALL
    • Exit

Restart your computer after performing above steps.

Like several others, I could not even get to step one in the process with my laptop computer (my recovery and backup discs were not with me). I chatted with three Microsoft techs, all to no avail. (I borrowed my father’s Mac to contact MS, only to learn that anything I downloaded would not work for my PC. Thus, I ran to the local public library, and the third tech directed me to a file that would take two hours to download. The library would close before I could achieve that goal.)

While I still was at the library, I decided to go on-line to find a computer tech store or technician who could help me. I used Thumbtack (excellent), and soon three techs/companies submitted bids for my case. I had a previous situation in which I spilled hot tea all over my laptop, and it took nearly $2,000 to retrieve my files and get a new laptop.

I was amazed to see that two technicians offered rates as low as $85 (flat rate). I saw that the first technician had a five-star rating (out of five) with 70+ people giving him that unanimous vote of confidence. If you’re in the Milwaukee area, I highly recommend Maceo (of Maceo’s Enterprises, LLC) for his kind, prompt, ethical, and excellent service. He was willing to pick up/deliver my laptop for no additional fee and got it fixed immediately. I gave him a healthy tip despite his protestations.

Maceo told me that my laptop was so far gone it didn’t recognize a thumb drive. Given his skills, he was able to get around that and then do the process of a “custom install” (I lost my applications) of Windows. All of my data remained intact (a “clean install” would have erased all of my applications and data). I hope that this information helps people who find themselves unable to do any of the suggested steps. Hang in there!

As soon as I log onto my computer the bluescreen pops up and I am only able to go into my uefi settings, I cannot do anything else really.

Ok I have done the command but it responded with:

Failure when attempting to copy boot files.

I also noticed it mentioned a "System Recovery Drive" I have no idea what that is but I have a windows 8.1 re-installation disk.
