Wired 600 Keyboard can only use one key at a time

Hi, I've been having problems with my laptop's integrated keyboard (keys either type nothing, or type multiple letters), so I bought a Wired 600 keyboard and plugged it in via USB. The keyboard has one major problem, however. It can only use one key at a time - so for example, I cannot use shift and 1 to make an exclamation mark. If I try, nothing happens. I can type 1, or I can use the shift key on my laptop keyboard and the 1 on my USB keyboard (I had to type these brackets on the integrated keyboard). Furthermore, because I cannot type a new character before the previously used key has been fully released, I am being forced to type very slowly, one key at a time. Just to clarify, I can type full-speed on my laptop's integrated keyboard, it's just the multiple letters that are the problem there and I'm certain that's a hardware fault.

Can anyone help with this bizarre problem? I am on Windows 7. IThe OS is fully updated as are all the drivers for my laptop. I have installed and reinstalled the keyboard drivers too.

Thank you
