Three times I have lost my e-mail folders and all the e-mails contained therein.  This last time, they disappeared and next thing I know, all the incoming e-mails from August through October are listed although most had been advertisements and I had deleted them.  I have Windows 8.1 and would like to know how to retrieve the e-mails and folders as I had some cherished pictures in those folders!

    Hi Jean,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

From the issue description, I understand you want to retrieve your emails and folders in Windows Live Mail.

If you are using Microsoft account in Windows Live mail, you can follow the Microsoft article below to restore deleted email messages.

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/outlook/recover-deleted-messages

If you are using 3^rd^ party email in Windows Live Mail 2012, you can follow the steps below.

Step1:How to recover deleted emails and folders.

    1. Open and Explorer window (Click Start => Computer) and then navigate to this path: C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft. The "username" folder there represents your Windows user name. Also, if you are unable to see the AppData folder inside your "username" folder, this simply means that you are unable to see hidden folders since the AppData folder is a hidden folder. You need to "show" hidden folders, files and drives so that you will be able to follow the remaining procedures.

    2. When you are in the "Microsoft" folder, please locate Windows Live Mail folder there.

    3. When found, COPY the Windows Live Mail. Then paste it in your desktop screen or any location you prefer, like your My Documents. This is to backup the folder.

    4. When copying is done, right click on the Windows Live Mail folder then click on "Restore previous versions”.

    5. In the dialog box that opens, please choose the date of the restore point that you want to restore your mails from. Click on that restore item then click on the Restore button.

    6. In the confirmation prompt that shows up, click on Restore button to confirm the restore operation.

    7. Then the restore process will proceed.

    8. Please give it some time until the operation is done. Then click the OK button

    9. Now close all windows and other programs. Then open your Windows Live Mail and all your emails shall be restored to the date that you selected.

Let us know the status of the issue.

I have lost my e-mail folders and all the e-mails contained therein.

Were these folders under an account or under Storage folders?

Have you confirmed that the missing folders or messages that were in them are no longer visible in Windows Live Mail?

    • When viewing your message list, press Ctrl-Y to reveal the entire folder tree. Look for your missing folders, possibly several layers deep under Recovered items or inside another folder.
    • Use the Search for a message box to look for one of the messages in a missing folder. Use a search term in the Subject or From fields for quickest results.

It's always helpful to know which version of the program you're using and which type* of account(s) are involved. You should also give the domain of the accounts involved and also say whether you're signed in with a Microsoft Account. Other information that might be relevant includes the name of your anti-virus program and the name of any 'performance enhancing' software installed on the computer.

    * HTTP, POP3 or IMAP. If you're not sure, right-click on the account name in the folder pane and selectProperties*. The type of account is given at the top of the* Server(s) tab. The properties dialogue for an HTTP account has three tabs, for a POP3 account four and for an IMAP4 account five.

... right click on the Windows Live Mail folder then click on "Restore previous versions”.

Jean is using Windows 8.1. As far as I'm aware, Restore previous versions isn't a feature of Windows 8.
