Any way to pause or stop the Task Scheduler (service) without rebooting?

I go to Windows+R,  services.msc

There I select Task scheduler and try to pause or stop it clicking the corresponding buttons... but they are grayed out so I can't. Isn't there anything I can do to stop it?

Even though the stop button doesn't look like greyed out, it doesn't work.

Thanks

    Hi,

    Sorry for late reply.

I would suggest you to follow the steps below as alternative method to Pause or Stop Task Scheduler.

    1. Press Windows Logo + "R", type in "taskschd.msc" and click "OK".
    2. In the left pane of Task Scheduler, click on to expand

"Task Scheduler Library>Microsoft>Windows>TaskScheduler. 3. In the middle pane of TaskScheduler, right click on the Regular Maintenance and select Disable.

Important: To start **"**Task Scheduler" follow the above steps and select Enable.

Note: If you disable Automatic Maintenance, then it would be recommended to manually start Automatic Maintenance at least once a week or as needed.

Please do let us know if you need further assistance, we’ll be glad to assist you.

    Hi Ajay,

Thanks for your info and warnings.

I want to disable the Task Scheduler because it keeps refreshing the File Explorer interrupting my workflow (can't keep seeing the files that I reach by scrolling at the bottom -I work in Details view, reading the preview pane...- and renaming any file is interrupted and deleted back if the refresh happens while writing on the file before pressing enter -too many times). I posted that problem as another Microsoft Answers question here,  a MVP recommended me doing that (I was actually going to do it) to test if the problem disappeared, and for now everything points to the Task Scheduler as the one to blame...

    Hi,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Community.

    Just a question first, to get a clear picture of the issue;

    1. Why do you want to disable "Task Scheduler" Service?

Task Scheduler Enables a user to Configure and Schedule Automated tasks on computer. The service also hosts multiple Windows System-Critical tasks. If this service is

Stopped or Disabled, these tasks will not be run at their scheduled times. If this Service is

Disabled, any services that Explicitly depend on it will Fail to start and system will become

    Unstable.

Note: The Task Scheduler service runs as LocalSystem in a Shared Process of svchost.exe. Other services might run in the same process. If Task Scheduler fails to start, the error is logged. Windows 8 startup proceeds, but a message box is displayed informing you that the Schedule service has failed to start.

Important: It is not recommended to Disable any Service, as all the Services depends on each other.

Also I would suggest you to refer the below article

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa383614(v=vs.85).aspx

Note: In above link refer to the section "Purpose" and "Where applicable".

Hope this information is helpful. Please do let us know if you need further assistance, we’ll be glad to assist you.
