"Network password" needed to link to Seagate GoFlex storage device

For two years I've had two Windows 7 computers linked to a Seagate GoFlex backup storage device.  The computers connect to the router wirelessly and the GoFlex connects to the router by Ethernet.  Backups have been working well.

I'm now replacing one of the Windows 7 machines with a Windows 8 machine.  The Windows 8 machine also connects to the router wirelessly.   In the Network view, I can see the GoFlex attached to the router, but when I double click on it I receive a Windows message that I need to enter the Network Password.  Apparently because of this, the Seagate Desktop software can't connect to the GoFlex and the Memeo backup software supplied by Seagate also can't see the GoFlex.  (The Seagate Desktop and Memeo software connect to the GoFlex perfectly from the Windows 7 computers.)  I upgraded from Windows 8 to 8.1 and I have the same problem with the need to enter a Network Password in both versions of Windows 8.

Perhaps there is a Seagate connection problem as well, but the first issue to resolve seems to be that Windows 8/8.1 needs a Network Password.  I've tried my new Windows 8 user name and password, my router name and password and my HomeGroup name and password.  I've even tried my Seagate user name and password, but this seems unlikely since the pop-up is Windows generated.

I updated the Seagate Dashboard to the new version that works with Windows 8 -- but the fundamental issue seems to be that Windows 8 needs a network password but it won't tell me which network password to use.

I'm guessing there is a new security setting in Windows 8 compared with Windows 7.  (I generally use the default security settings.)

Would someone know what network password I'm supposed to supply or what security setting I need to change in Windows 8.1?

I don't know how to fix this yet but if you enter goflexhome\ & your username n the windows logon box with your password it will let you in! I have the same problem so will update if I figure it out!

Thanks very much, John, for the advice.  I had already turned off password protected sharing in Windows 8 and I had already confirmed that Seagate lists my device as working in Windows 8.

I still have a problem but I'm closer to a solution.  Let me list a few of the points:

In the Network view, I can see "axentraserver: root".  According to a Seagate user thread, this is the base of the GoFlex storage device, which is said to be a super-mini computing device that communicates between the hard disk and the network and has a bit of memory to store passwords.  The action of clicking on this popped up a Seagate window asking me for a user name and password.  I entered my main Seagate user name and password, and I was into the "axentraserver" and I could see the hard drive storage drive that fits/plus into the base, enough to see total storage and how much was already used.  Step 1.

At this point I clicked again on the GoFlex Home icon in Network view and received the Windows-generated popup asking me to enter my network user name and password.  My Windows email account-based user name was filled in but what this popup needed was my Seagate user name and password.  I entered these and Bingo! I was granted access to the storage device, where I could drill down to the individual folder and file level and see everything that was backed up there from the computer I'm replacing.

Having clicked to save my credentials when I entered the Seagate user name and password, I now no longer need to enter these to open up the GoFlex when I click on it within Network view.  Step 2.

One might think the quest is successfully concluded -- but no.  The Seagate Dashboard software and the Memeo backup software are supposed to automatically connect to the GoFlex so they can begin saving, but they aren't able to do this yet.

I thought I should provide this progress report in case it helps others who happen upon this Q&A in the Microsoft community.  I'll be back when I figure out the remaining steps.

Thank you for sharing this. It seems unbelievable that the problem I have also been struggling with (on Windows 7) had such a simple solution!

    Hi Bill,

You may face this issue if Password-protected sharing is turned on or due to changes in router settings. Follow these methods and check if it helps:

Method 1: Turn off Password-protected sharing and check. Refer to section “Password-protected sharing is turned on from this link to turn it off”:

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-IN/windows-8/cant-connect-other-pcs

Method 2: I would suggest you to reset router and assign new user name and password and check. For more information on how to reset router refer the router manual or contact their support site.

Method 3: Make sure the connection is accurate, refer the suggestion from this link:
