Thanks very much, John, for the advice. I had already turned off password protected sharing in Windows 8 and I had already confirmed that Seagate lists my device as working in
Windows 8.
I still have a problem but I'm closer to a solution. Let me list a few of the points:
In the Network view, I can see "axentraserver: root". According to a Seagate user thread, this is the base of the GoFlex storage device, which is said to be a super-mini computing
device that communicates between the hard disk and the network and has a bit of memory to store passwords. The action of clicking on this popped up a Seagate window asking me for a user name and password. I entered my main Seagate user name and password,
and I was into the "axentraserver" and I could see the hard drive storage drive that fits/plus into the base, enough to see total storage and how much was already used. Step 1.
At this point I clicked again on the GoFlex Home icon in Network view and received the Windows-generated popup asking me to enter my network user name and password. My Windows
email account-based user name was filled in but what this popup needed was my Seagate user name and password. I entered these and Bingo! I was granted access to the storage device, where I could drill down to the individual folder and file level and see everything
that was backed up there from the computer I'm replacing.
Having clicked to save my credentials when I entered the Seagate user name and password, I now no longer need to enter these to open up the GoFlex when I click on it within Network
view. Step 2.
One might think the quest is successfully concluded -- but no. The Seagate Dashboard software and the Memeo backup software are supposed to automatically connect to the GoFlex
so they can begin saving, but they aren't able to do this yet.
I thought I should provide this progress report in case it helps others who happen upon this Q&A in the Microsoft community. I'll be back when I figure out the remaining steps.
