MTP USB Driver Error from Windows 8.1

Hey Folks,

I am at the end of my line .... I have tried everything that I can find and nothing seems to work.

I have a HP Laptop and have updated (through prompt) to the Windows 8.1 version. I have always previously had no problems simply plugging my iPhone 5s into the USB port on the side and it is recognised - first thing is usually to ask/prompt me to upload any fresh photos to my laptop. It is also always recognised in iTunes as well as in File Explorer in Windows.

Since the last update, my iPhone no longer exists. When I try to upload images in Windows Photos, I am told "there is no device found". If I look on File Explorer, my iPhone does not appear anywhere. If I open iTunes, it recognises that my iPhone is connected and charging, however I can not manipulate music or anything through there. I have also plugged in different phones and they're also not recognised.

I have followed a million steps online to fix this problem. I have twice now deleted all of the Apple associated programs (as instructed) and reinstalled iTunes. I have reinstalled the MTP USB Driver so many times, however now find an online suggestion that is would make no difference, as if it is a driver malfunction that Windows will simply be reinstalling the same faulty driver.

When I look on Device Manager, under Portable Devices, MTP USB Device is there, however with a yellow exclamation mark on it. When I right click and look at Properties, the box in General says "This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31). Insufficient system resources exist to complete the API.".

Someone must have a solution for this. I just don't understand how everything can work fine and then all of a sudden my phone no longer exists.

CAN SOMEONE/ANYONE HELP ME!!!!

    Hi Jese,

Sorry, to know that you are still facing this issue.

    • What is the make and model of the computer?
    • Did you try connecting the USB cable to another USB port and check?

To fix this problem, use the following methods in the order in which they are listed. After each method, check if problem is fixed. If the problem is not fixed, try the next method.

Method 1: I would suggest you to uninstall and reinstall USB controller and check if it helps.

To remove and reinstall all USB controllers, follow these steps:

    a. Press Windows key + R, type sysdm.cpl in the Open box, and then click OK.

    b. Click the Hardware tab.

    c. Click the Device Manager button.

    d. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.

    e. Right-click every device under the Universal Serial Bus controllers node, and then click Uninstall to remove them one at a time.

    f. Restart the computer, and then reinstall the USB controllers.

    g. Plug in the removable USB storage device, and then test to make sure that the issue is resolved.

If issue persist, proceed to next method.

Method 2: I would like you to go to the computer manufacturer’s website to download the updated chipset drivers and install them.

    Download and install drivers

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/all-drivers

Hope this helps. If you need further assistance with Windows, let us know and will be glad to help.

    Hey John,

I am getting a bit lost in the "registry back-up" and know whether and if i am backing up the correct things, however this is what I have determined so far:

    • there is nothing wrong with my iPhone ... I have taken it back to the place of purchase, as well as plugging it into a colleagues laptop, to which it worked in both.
    • the USB port is fine, as I have inserted an independent USB memory stick and removed photos from this ... in the same port as identifies with the yellow triangle & exclamation mark. so, it's worked fine.
    • I've then inserted a separate device (ipod) into the same port and it also comes up with the exclamation mark again.
    • Finally, the same port now recognises my iPhone with regards to iTunes ... that is, I can now manipulate music on my iPhone, however can still no upload photos or see my iPhone represented in File Explorer.

Therefore, I am now at the stage where all I can see is the problem is totally the MTP USB Device Driver??? Am I right??? And, how has this changed since the last update?

    Cheers

    Jase

    Hi Jase,

Sorry, to know that you are still facing this issue.

A Code 10 error is generated in Device Manager in one of the following situations:

    • Device Manager can't start the device.
    • One of the drivers that the device needs does not start.

Device Manager has insufficient information to recognize the error that is bubbled up by the device driver.

Note In this situation, the Code 10 error can be a very generic message that indicates some kind of unspecified driver or device problem. Follow the troubleshooting steps from this Windows 7 article which is also applicable for Windows 8 and check if it helps.

Important Follow the steps in this section carefully. Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Before you modify it, back up the registry for restoration(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756/ )

    in case problems occur.

Fix: "This device cannot start" Code 10 error in Device Manager in Windows

Hope this helps. If you need further assistance with Windows, let us know and will be glad to help.

    Hey John S,

    Thanks for the reply.

I Have gone through the 3 Steps outlined below, and some changes have happened, however the problem is still not entirely fixed.

Method 1: Unfortunately, there is no “Roll Back” option available, as outlined in Method 1.

Method 2: I have undertaken all of these steps and my iPhone is now recognised in iTunes and I can also manipulate the songs to the phone … which is indeed more than I could before. However, all other problems are still apparent.

Method 3: I followed through these steps, however there were only two Restore events to choose from. It took three rounds to get the Restore process working, and indeed it may be what actually got the iTunes working again.

Situation: So, as it stands at the moment, the iPhone is now recognised in iTunes, however still not apparent in File Explorer as my phone. I have also again tried to upload images on the phone in Windows Photos, however it still comes up with No Device apparent. In Device Manager, the MTP USB Device is still marked with a yellow triangle and exclamation mark.

    (Error screen images attached).

    Any further ideas?

    Jase

    Hi Jase,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I can imagine the inconvenience you have experienced. Don’t worry; we will certainly help you.

The only thing I can think of is that the drivers somehow automatically updated. Let’s try these Methods and check if it helps:

Method 1: You might try to Roll Back the drivers to a previous version. If you have drivers to Roll Back to, the button will be useable if not, it will be gray.

You can try roll backing the MTP drivers:

Windows allows you to rollback to previous Driver versions. Here’s what you need to do to complete the task.

    1. Press Windows key + X, Open Device Manager
    2. Locate and double-click the hardware device whose driver you need to rollback
    3. In the properties dialog box, click the Roll Back Driver button
    4. Click Yes when you are asked, “Are you sure you would like to roll back to the previously installed driver software?”
    5. Restart Windows after the previously installed driver is reinstalled

Note: You can roll back only to the previously installed driver and not to the drivers installed before it.

You might check the disks that came with the machine, there may be a driver disk to reinstall the original.

If issue persist, try next method.

Method 2: Here’s an Apple KB article that may just have the fix for the issue you’re facing. Follow the troubleshooting steps mentioned in the above article, in the order and check if your issue gets fixed.

iPhone or iPod is not recognized properly by computer when USB drivers are not installed properly or are out of date

    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538

Also **** run the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter refer to section “Run the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter” from this link:

If issue persist, try next method.

Method 3: You can also try performing System Restore and check if it helps:

    1. Press Windows key + R
    2. Type rstrui and press enter.
    3. Click Next and choose the restore point, when your computer was working fine.

Hope this helps. If you need further assistance with Windows, let us know and will be glad to help.
