I agree Windows Defender is just fine for the regular user.   However, i work at home.  I am a heavy pc user.  Often times my pc is running 24/7.  If i have only Defender on, after awhile my computer gets "gunky" and slow is the best way to describe it.  System Mechanic does keep a clean tight ship and to me seems to keep a cleaner PC.  Microsoft would love our pc's to be loaded with all of their crazy apps and programs, so a third party, high grade product like System Mechanic Pro does the job.  Finally,  I really have simply used trial and error with these things.  I have never had to deal with a virus or any major security threat with System Mechanic.  Defender,  no so lucky, Webroot would make my computer freeze and when i went to remove it, sure enough is not really removable (!?) and Norton failed too.  So far so good with System Mechanic Pro 15.  Every tool you need in one clean program.  It doesn't bother you and does its job.  Not only did Norton fail the job, I got tired of it intrerrupting my work.  And then Defender, well honestly i felt like it was sleeping on the job sometimes.  Just my experience.  Like human bodies, every computer and how they interact with each user makes for a completely different scenario.

All I know is that I have used SM since 2007...

Sm doing it's thing, clicked on 'fix' and it started, THEN box appears, SM can't connect to IE..ALL is working fine, I was connected...called Iolo, told me to uninstall, did...between Dell and Iolo, since 4/2, I have been able to download, BUT, will not accept code, says can't connect with IE...

Neither Dell or Iolo have been able to solve the problem...I have lost a1 year that I have PAID for!

If anyone out there can explain this, would LOVE an answer and fix.

I agree with "rpsabq " about System Mechanic Pro keeps a faster system. I have used other antivirus software and Norton, McAffee didn't cut it. I have used them and another called Panda long ago and a paid subscription to an early Microsoft one in which I lost all of my data in a crash when said it was being discontinued. I still have those backup cds to remind me.

System Mechanic Pro 15 worked well on 8 pcs I would run with windows defender. I was and currently I have shut them down, 8 PCs running BOINC for Berkley College since 2006. I would run these PCs 24/7. Operating these science programs since 2008, I have not had a virus issue that was not detected.

I did encounter notifications in my system messages that I had no "anti-virus" protection. Windows Defender seems to be on as does IOLO System Shield but not so. Both are turned off and notified by a flag warning.

At the command prompt, I turn on one or the other but cannot turn on both and I can run for a while. Either says antivirus is active. Then time passes and they mysteriously turn themselves off.

ON 8 PC systems running, all have conflicted with this combination but always were reset-able.

SMPro15 boost made a good improvement in these science programs running

To fix these problems, I have to re-install windows and purge everything. I find the cloud disruptive too and shut it off as it tries to store often. Then it would want me to buy more cloud space=****.

I have not had a virus issue that I know of but the system has detected and removed them. I often wonder if they are recognizing each others virus recognition lists which both constantly update.

As I have used System Mechanic Pro 15 and earlier versions for so many years and have shut down the Microsoft versions, Windows has conflict with SMPro's "speed boost" Like Ultra and

    endurance.

Without SMPro and running Windows Defender, I also ran Malware bytes in some of my slower machines to replace SMP and satisfy Windows 8.1 that I have a virus program. Windows kept telling me that I had no program running even though Malware was updating and recognizing security conflicts.

Since I am getting tired of Windows Defender and antivirus merry go round. I am shutting down all of these systems for a while. I am too old to waste my time on such things. Maybe I will go back to a pad and pencil.

    Hi,

Windows Defender in Windows 8 is a full featured antivirus based on MSE. As such

you should never be running two antivirus at the same time, or even have them

on the computer at the same time. So you can't use Windows Defender and the

Iolo System Mechanic's Antivirus at the same time.

Added that Registry Cleaners and/or System Optimizers provide no real benefits.

So you really don't need System Mechanic.

    ======================================================

Windows 8 includes an automatically loaded updated version of Windows Defender

which is a full antivirus based on Microsoft Security Essentials.  (Windows Defender

for XP, Vista, and Windows 7 was only antispyware.) So if you upgrade the protection

is automatic and is on by default at installation.

How to Add "Scan with Windows Defender" for Files and Folders in Windows 8

    http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/15790-scan-windows-defender-add-windows-8-a.html

Windows Defender will automatically scan once per day. Run Windows Defender to see the

last date and time as well as the type - Quick, Full, or Custom.  The type set will be the type

Windows Defender runs during the once per day scan,

     =====================================================

WinKey + C - Search - type in Defender - Home Page - select the type scan you want

and it will do it once a day. On the Settings tab be sure Real Time Protection is enabled.

With Real Time Protection files and downloads are checked as they are accessed so there

is little need for scheduling scans. I use the "Quick" setting. Under Settings - Advanced

it is set to scan archives.

    Hope this helps.
