Hello,

Is there a way to change the default sign-in option to pin code instead of the real password when unlocking my computer?

Getting abit tiresome to have to press "Sign-in options" every time i want to use my pin code to log on.

Regards

    Hi Roman,

Welcome to Microsoft community forum. Sorry, to know that you are facing this issue.

    • Did you check in new user account?
    • Did you try removing/ disabling and re-adding the pin and check?

I would suggest you to run System File Checker tool (SFC.exe) and check if it helps. The System File Checker tool (SFC.exe) scans for missing or corrupted system files and repairs them.

Run System File checker to see if you have any corrupted system files.

    a) From the Start screen, type Command Prompt

    b) Right-click on the command prompt and choose Run as Administrator.

    c) Type the following command, and then press ENTER:

    sfc /scannowand press Enter.

The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions

Hope this helps. If you need further assistance with Windows, let us know and will be glad to help.

    Hi Fredrik,

On the login screen below the password box click on Sign-in Options. You can view two option, one for password and one for Pin. Click on PIN and enter the pin. When you restart the computer, by default Windows will remember the previous option which you have chosen to login to Windows (PIN).

Sign in to or out of Windows

If Windows is not remembering the PIN. There could be issue with user profile. Try creating local account with user name and password and then enable PIN password and check if new local user account remembers the PIN as default login option.

    Create a user account

Hope this helps. If you need further assistance with Windows, let us know and will be glad to help.

    Hi John _

I don't know if you are still with the forum. I am a very happy Windows 7 Professional user, and have been trying to assist my mother with her Windows 8.1 machine.  I have run into this same failure of Windows to reset to the last used sign in option as have others, but with a new twist:  after signing in with the PIN, her computer defaults to a message when opening that her password entered was incorrect.  There are no alternative sign in options displayed.  The result is I have to hit escape twice to bring up the sign in options, which show TWO different user Icons.  I select the one with my mother's name, then it brings up the pin option.  To make things even worse, it was my cousin who set up the PIN option and I don't know if she possibly did something wrong there - such as creating a second user profile when she did it.

And to make things even worse my mother lives 2,500 miles away - I just discovered her sign in problem while visiting and now I'm back home.  I could try and remotely access her computer using TechViewer, but that would require me walking her through that process which is simple for most computer users, but not for an 86 year old woman! I have not yet tried your "sfc/scannow" suggestion, but if I can get a remote session set up I will try that even though I'm skeptical that is the resolution.

I have my Windows 7 machine set up with NO PASSWORD:  I just click on my user icon and voila! my machine opens up.  Honestly passwords are the bane of computers and technology for the casual layman user, and just really are not necessary.  Is there anyway to set up a Windows 8 machine without a password, or is that no longer an option?

Thank you for any hints you may have.

I have almost the same issue as Frederik.

Windows really remembers the last option, but until I switch to another user.

My login option is being reseted (to password) every time a second user logs in.
