    Hi,

I understand that you want to know about PlayReady PC runtime amd64.

PlayReady is a Digital Rights Management (DRM) from Microsoft for portable devices. It was announced in February 2007.

The main differences relative to previous DRM schemes from Microsoft are:

Some popular features that were already present in other DRM schemes in the market have been added; these include the concept of domain (group of devices belonging to the same user which can share the same licenses), Embedded Licenses (licenses that are embedded in the content files, avoiding a separate step for license acquisition) and envelopes (the ability to DRM arbitrary, potentially non-media content). It is also the protection scheme for IIS Smooth Streaming, Microsoft's adaptive streaming technology.

It is platform independent: unlike other Microsoft DRM schemes like Janus, PlayReady can be ported to any kind of portable device, even if it uses non-Microsoft technology (OS, codecs, media player, etc.). But Microsoft has never developed or released a version of its PlayReady DRM for any Linux distribution.

PlayReady competes with other proprietary DRM schemes and even more with DRM-free software, most notably Apple's FairPlay introduced in iTunes and QuickTime. There are several other DRM schemes that are competing to become the dominant DRM technology (e.g. OMA DRM).

Microsoft released the first version of the PlayReady suite (Porting Kit for devices, PC SDK and runtime, Server SDK) in June 2008. Silverlight 2.0, released in October 2008, supports content restricted with PlayReady. As of Silverlight 4.0, the implementation of Microsoft PlayReady in Silverlight supports offline content (via persisted license), subscription scenarios (via chained licenses) and online, streaming-only content (via simple non-persistent licenses). Output protection support was also added in Silverlight 4.0.

PlayReady is supported on the Silverlight implementation of Windows Phone 7.

Windows Media Center TV Pack 2008 and Windows 7 can allow content providers, such as TV stations, to use the PlayReady PC runtime to locally encrypt premium TV content, including otherwise unrestricted cable and satellite TV signals.

Hope it helps. For any further Windows related assistance, feel free to contact us and we will be happy to help.

    Regards!

I have a new HP desktop PC (Intel Core i7) and I am cleaning out the pre-installed junk (control panel)... and thankfully the manufacturers have wised-up and there really isn't a lot of extra stuff (like there was 10 year ago) although I did see "PlayReady PC Runtime amd64" and my initial reaction was... delete it.  But I figured I'd do a search first.  Well... you get the mumbo-jumo answer from "the expert" Anoop... when anyone with half a clue realizes that the essence of the question is... "Can I delete this program?" -- and I'm guessing the answer is "yes" (so that's what I'm doing).  I'm sure the minute I do it, the new machine will blow up!

AMD  is the brand of the processor:   Short for AdvancedMicro Devices, a manufacturer of chips for personal computers. AMD is challenging Intel with a set of Intel-compatible microprocessors. 64 is a 64bit operating system

Good Question, Harold.  In addition, it would be helpful to a home user such as myself, probably Harold and many, many others to address areas of our immediate concern in a functional manner rather answering the question by introducing other technical terms, ideas and software versions to explain

"PlayReady PC runtime amd64". Can this program be safely removed from a Laptop or Desktop or any other devices? Are there benefits for the user if  this software is installed? What happens if unlicensed or illegal software is detected?

Finally, while it is not really not important, I am really curious about the significance of the words, "amd64" in the name of the file

That is from Windows Media Center. You can uninstall Windows Media Center to get rid of it.
