Original Title:Extreme lagging of win 8 laptop

I am facing extreme lagging problems on my Lenovo laptop. It came with windows 8 pre installed. Whenever i play any games or browse the net or play videos, whatever the reason it is, it lags. It is becoming impossible to use now. I use firefox for browsing, and kmp for playing videos. I have also tried to play videos by WMP, initiating only that program and nothing else (except the ones that already startup when the laptop turns on), it was Still found to be lagging. I have used CCleaner and have also checked the condition of my hard drive which at that time said Good.

Also updating to windows 8.1 keeps on giving new type of error every time (i have tried twice). Please help.

my system: Lenovo Z580. i3, 4GB, GT635M 1GB, 1TB Seagate HDD.

    Hi Arindam,

Thank you for posting the query in Microsoft Community.

I am sorry to know that the system is very slow and you are unable to install Windows 8.1.

This issue could occur due to third party application running in the background or due to virus infections.

Do you receive any error message?

Please check for the process that is causing CPU usage. You can find out using Windows Task Manager:

    • Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc keys to open Task Manager.

    • Check for the process that is taking high usage.

    Please follow the methods below.

    Method 1

     Step 1:

I suggest you to check if the issue occurs in Safe Mode with Networking.

Refer the following link to boot the computer in Safe Mode with Networking:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2809468/en-us

If the issue doesn’t persists in safe mode with networking, perform Clean Boot and check.

    Step 2:

Clean Boot process will help you determine which third party program/app is causing this issue. It could be some other application or programs, which runs at the background, leading to this issue.

I suggest you to perform Clean Boot and check.

How to perform a Clean Boot in Windows: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Note: Please go through the section**: How to reset the computer to start as usual after troubleshooting with clean boot** of the KB article to boot the computer in Normal startup after fixing the issue.

If issue still persists, then try method 2.

    Method 2

Run the System Maintenance troubleshooter and check.

    1. Press Windows key + X and click on Control Panel.

    2. Double click on Troubleshooting and click on View all.

    3. Click and run the trouble shooter for System Maintenance.

If issue still persists, then try method 3.

    Method 3

Run Microsoft Safety Scanner and check if there are any infections in the computer.

You can download and run the Safety Scanner from this link:

    http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx

Note: When running a scan using an Anti-Virus program, any data files that are infected may be cleaned by deleting the file entirely, which means there is a potential for data loss.

Hope this helps in resolving the issue. If issue persists, do get back to us. We will be happy to assist you.

Thanks for replying. I dint have any virus or anything in my machine. Just switched off those unnecessary bloatware that start on with the laptop from task manager and updated windows. The problem seems to have gone for the time being (I dont know if it will reappear after i restart the machine or not). Ill keep you posted if anything goes back to abnormal again.

Can you please help me with updating to win 8.1? I did download from the store and the machine restarted and everything to install the thing, but after like three four hours it gave a error message saying it could not update my system and its restoring back to the old version. The error code (?) was 0xC1900101-0x20040017.
