SO frustrated! Just about done with Windows 8. My windows update wont update...it just runs for hours. My windows Defender also wont update...I tried the Update troubleshooter...Nothing. I didnt install, change or do anything other than sending emails yesterday...then this. I tried a couple commands from Run, wont work.

Before i toss this once beautiful computer into the Harsh Minnesota -25F temperatures, does anyone know a command to fix? Is my registry bad? How can i fix this...

Frustrated...

thanks!

This error can occur when the Defender service is stopped. If you installed another antivirus software- Defender was disabled. When you then remove the antivirus- Defender should enabled automatically again- but sometimes that doesn’t work. Check in services if the 2 Windows Defender services are running. Then open Defender from the control panels and change to the settings tab. At the end there is a menu entry called “Administrator”. Choose it and then there is a checkbox “Turn on this app”. Activate it and run Windows Update again. It should work then.

A quick search on this community said that that error means digital signatures cannot be verified.

As Stephen Boots said, Refresh of the PC will solve the problem. But before going through that hassle I think you should check PC date/time, as per Stephen Boots's suggestion, and try this first:

    1. Press Win key + R. Run dialog will open. Type "sigverif" and hit enter. Then press 'Start' to run 'File Signature Verification'.
    2. Press Win key + X. Click on 'Command Prompt (Admin)'. Type this command in command prompt and hit enter:

    sfc /scannow

Don't toss the PC. review this first:

Restore, reset, refresh Windows 8: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/restore-refresh-reset-pc

Before heading down this path, though, is the PC date and time correct?

    Is Windows activated?

Is it the same computer as in this previous thread of yours?...

Im running windows 8 64 bit

    Running IE Updated version

    My Antivirus is Norton

I dont know what Firewall is in place, I thought it was Windows Defender

I ran SpyHunter to clean my computer

I have Glary Utilities Installed since I purchased the computer

    The error code is 0x80070424

Ive run a full system scan with Norton that caught 7 viruses and cleaned them

Trying to do a manual Windows update, but it is set to update automatically
