"Application unable to complete an operation"

I recently had to reinstall my operating system on an ultra book running windows 7.

After the operating system reinstalled it applied 104 Windows updates.  Not all of them installed successfully, but over the next few days all the important updates have been successfully installed.

But I keep getting this error message that "The application was unable to complete an operation" with no indication which application.  Below are the details provided by the error:

    Hello,

    Thank you for the update.

From the above given event logs we got the below information:

An attached device is not working for one of these reasons: (1) it is switched off, or connected improperly; (2) the floppy disk and drive types are incompatible; (3) the floppy disk is not properly inserted in the drive; (4) the drive door is open; or (5) the floppy disk is not properly formatted.

You may try to disconnect all the external device and test the issue if persists. Also if you are connecting a modem, try to restart the modem and check.

Hope this helps. Please feel free to write us back for further assistance and we will be glad to help you ahead.

I apologize - apparently I didn't wait long enough in clean reboot.  I forgot to switch back to normal start up today and the error appeared.

I then went back into msconfig and switched back to normal.  The error was still there.

Since the third part of your suggestion was to look at the error log, which I did, did the above cited errors provide any additional insight to the problem?

    Hello,

    Thank you for the reply.

As you said the issue doesn't appear in clean boot state, it means there is a third party software, or service causing the issue. You may refer to the steps under "How to determine what is causing the problem by performing a clean boot" from the link below:

Note***:*** Refer "How to reset the computer to start as usual after troubleshooting with clean boot" under more information to reset the computer to start as normal after troubleshooting.

Hope this helps. Feel free to write us back for further assistance and we will be glad to help you ahead.

    1. Do you get this error message while, using one particular application?

No.  It first appeared after I did the Windows Updates.  It appears after start up before I open any applications or software.

    1. Apart from installing Windows Updates, do remember making any other changes in the computer?

I did install several programs but the error appeared before I did any of that.  As mentioned above, it first appeared after doing Windows Update.

    1. Is your computer connected to a Domain Network?

It's connected to wifi and there are other devices also connected to that wifi.  But I don't think it's connected to a domain network.

When starting in Safe Mode the error did not appear after start up.

When performing a clean book the error also did not appear after start up.

Below are all the errors from event log:

I did restart my computer three times in trying to test the suggestions and most of those reviews are from the first or second time - not the most recent.  Though, I am still getting the error now.  It has popped up three times in trying to compose this reply.

    Hello,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

I understand that you have issues with the above mentioned error message. We will surely help you with the same.

I would like to know some more information on this issue to help you better.

    1. Do you get this error message while, using one particular application?
    2. Apart from installing Windows Updates, do remember making any other changes in the computer?
    3. Is your computer connected to a Domain Network?

In the meanwhile, please follow the suggestions mentioned below to fix the issue.

Step 1: You may try to put the computer in safe mode and test the issue because, Safe mode starts Windows with a limited set of files and drivers. Startup programs don't run in safe mode, and only the basic drivers needed to start Windows are installed. Follow the link below to boot to safe mode:

Start your computer in safe mode

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-7

Step 2: If the issues doesn't appear in safe mode try putting your system in Clean Boot state because, it helps in identifying if any third party applications or startup items are causing the issue. You need to follow the steps from the article mentioned below to perform a Clean Boot.

How to perform a clean boot in Windows

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Note***:*** Refer "How to reset the computer to start as usual after troubleshooting with clean boot" under more information to reset the computer to start as normal after troubleshooting.

Also, Open the link and follow the instructions in to get the event logs so that we can see which application is faulty.

    a) Open Control Panel, Go to System and Security, Click Administrative Tools and select View Event Logs.

    b) Select Windows Logs on the left side of the window.

    c) You will see a number of sub-categories. Selecting any of these categories will bring up a series of event logs in the center of the screen.

    d) Any entries listed as “Error”.

    e) Double click any found errors to investigate.

    f) Here you will be presented with any relevant information regarding your errors. Often this will simply display the error codereported by the error. However, other errors or warnings could provide clues to cause of the issue.

Hope this helps. otherwise, feel free to write us back for further assistance and we will be glad to help you ahead.
