The types of optical disc

Hi

I heard and sometimes see in the Internet such types of optical disc::

CD±R/RW, DVD±R/WR, CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, DVD-RAM, CD±R DL, CD±RW DL,  DVD DL, DVD±R DL, DVD±RW DL

First: The kind of discs I have been used to using, and seeing in the market are only:

CD-R, C-RW, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW.

However, I've never ever used or even seen such these optical discs below at all

CD-ROM, DVD-RAM, DVD-ROM, CD±R DL, CD±RW DL, DVD±R DL, DVD±RW DL

Thus, I don't know if there are really existing in the market or not?

**Second:**I don't know if these abbreviations are short for normal names in the third column, or not. So, Could you please  confirm for me if these abbrivations can decode to:

Abbrivation/shortten term Disc/Media/Drive Category/ Disc type Decoding
CD±R CD Drive CD± Recordable-Once Media, CD± Read-Only Access Media, CD ± write-once
CD±RW CD Drive CD± ReWritable Media
CD±ROM CD Drive CD± Recordable-Once Media, CD± Read-Only Access Media, CD± write-once disc
DVD±R DVD Drive DVD±Recordable-Once Media, DVD±Read-Only Access Media, DVD±write-once
DVD±RW DVD Drive DVD±ReWritable Media
DVD-RAM DVD Drive ????????????
DVD±ROM DVD Drive DVD±Recordable-Once Media, DVD±Read-Only Access Media, DVD±write-once
CD±R DL CD Drive CD±Recordable-Once Media, CD±Read-Only Access Media, CD±write-once
CD±RW DL CD Drive ???
DVD±R DL DVD Drive Dual-layer  DVD-R and DVD+R discs to store significantly more data/Dual-Layer DVD -RW
DVD±RW DL DVD ????

NOTE: I tried opening all discs on two computers with these speces :

I have a Windows 7 64Bit(SP1) with a HP laptop with i5Core.<br><br><br>This is optical drive:<br><br><br>Optical Drives <br><br>  hp CDDVDW TS-L633R <br><br>   Media Type DVD Writer <br><br>   Name hp CDDVDW TS-L633R <br><br>   Availability Running/Full Power <br><br>   Capabilities Random Access, Supports Writing, Supports Removable Media <br><br>   Read capabilities CD-R, CD-RW, CD-ROM, DVD-RAM, DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R DL, DVD-RW DL, DVD+R DL <br><br>   Write capabilities CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R DL, DVD+R DL <br><br>   Config Manager Error Code Device is working properly <br><br>   Config Manager User Config FALSE <br><br>   Drive E: <br><br>   Media Loaded FALSE <br><br>   SCSI Bus 0 <br><br>   SCSI Logical Unit 0 <br><br>   SCSI Port 0 <br><br>   SCSI Target Id 1 <br><br>   Status OK<br><br><br>----------------------------------------------------------------------<br><br><br>Also, I have Windows XP SP1(32Bit) with another Pentium III processor(1GHz), and 256MB of RAM<br><br><br>my Optical drive is: <br><br><br><br><br><br>Optical Drives <br><br>  HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GH22NP20 <br><br>   Media Type DVD Writer <br><br>   Name HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GH22NP20 <br><br>   Availability Running/Full Power <br><br>   Capabilities Random Access, Supports Removable Media <br><br>   Read capabilities CD-R, CD-RW, CD-ROM, DVD-RAM, DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R DL, DVD+R DL <br><br>   Write capabilities CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R DL, DVD+R DL <br><br>   Config Manager Error Code Device is working properly <br><br>   Config Manager User Config FALSE <br><br>   Drive F: <br><br>   Media Loaded FALSE <br><br>   SCSI Bus 0 <br><br>   SCSI Logical Unit 0 <br><br>   SCSI Port 1 <br><br>   SCSI Target Id 1 <br><br>   Status OK

Third:

IF you have a look at this screen shot below, you will see that CD Drive  is listed as the type of disc on the propersties, although a DVD-R disc is inserted into optical drive. Thus, I think DVD Drive should be listed as the type of disc inserted.

Finally: What difference is there between 'CD-R/DVD-R' and 'CD-ROM/DVD-ROM'. Since I got confused when I noticed::

  • With some CDs-R  is inserted into an optical drive, I see CD-ROM, insteaod of CD-R, since CD-R is inserted onto the drive.

  • With some CDs-R  inserted into an optical drive, I see a CD-R

  • With some DVDs-R  inserted into an optical drive, I  see a DVD-ROM is listed as disc type, instead of DVD-R since  DVD-R is inserted onto the drive.

  • With some DVD-R inserted into an optical drive, I see a DVD-R is listed as disc type.

    mfg = manufacturer

You're expecting too much from people. If you can't research it, how do you expect them to? Too much information.

Thats alot of data presented...However its listed on the pc,try going to

its mfg web site, locate its firmware update.98% of all optical drives have

one, once installed, youre pc will confirm its type...

    Thanks a lot,

Could you please udnerstand me, the optical drive is defined well, and it doesn't need any more drivers.

First Both my optical drive(HP optical drive, and desktop optical drive)  are functioning well

What have you not seen it not correct type?

Second: What is meant with 'mfg web site'? And for which drive should I update firmware?

Could you please take some of your percious time out to really go through my previous post and confirm for me if I am correct about what I wrote or not?
