HP Deskjet 2540 printer printer status reads offline

Original Title - HP Deskjet 2540 printer

When trying to print, error message reads printer offline.  HP help just tries to re-install printer and doesn't solve problem. Printer properties not ticked as offline and there is no way to change that to on-line as in previous windows.  Could anyone tell me how to change it to online please?

I would appreciate any help as I cannot print wirelessly from my laptop or connected from my desktop which runs Vista!

    Hi

I had this problem with my printer saying it was offline even though I keep it plugged in permanently. I found that to change the status to online, I had to press either the black or colour photocopy button to wake it up so that my documents would print.

It is annoying considering the whole point of being wireless was that you didn't need to go near the printer to print.

My only problem now is that with Windows 8.1 my documents print half a page and then stop printing, with my laptop telling me that there was an error but no explanation to it.

Any ideas how I can overcome this? I installed straight on to Windows 8.1 as I upgraded my windows 8 before I bought the printer!

    Hope this helps,

    Shannon

I am having the exact same problem.  I try to print, I get the printer off line message.  I "wake" it up  by walking down the hall to where the printer is, come back here and print.  Once the document prints it goes to sleep again, that is if I get a complete print and not half sheets as this person noted.  This has worked well for over a year now and has just started this.  I re installed and updated the drivers, so please don't tell me to do that.  Again, what's the point of being wireless if you have to constantly wake up the printer manually?

    Hi,

If you have issue with the computer even after installing the latest drivers, I suggest you to place the computer in Clean Boot and check.

To know how to place the computer in Clean Boot I suggest you to follow the below link.

    https://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Note: Reset the computer back to Normal Mode once you are done with the troubleshooting by following the section "How to reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting" from the same article.

Please reply with the results. I will be glad to help you further.

How is the printer connected to the Network? Is it setup as a wireless printer (which it is) or do you have it connected to another computer and share it? Is the printer recognized on any of the computers? It should be setup as a wireless printer that is directly connected only to your router instead of another computer--especially not directly connected to a vista computer. You must setup the printer for wireless access and that includes changing firewall settings on all computers. You will be guided by the install software to set it up as a wireless printer. You cannot use the install disk. You must download the latest windows 8.1 drivers and software for the win 8 computer--
