A Virus (or malware) is blocking my wireless internet access

Good evening,

I've been having a problem for the passed two days and was hoping that someone else has experienced this and solved it.

The internet on my desktop does not work. The network centre simply says "Connected with limited access"

  • I am sure the password is right

My desktop has a wireless network adapter (D-Link DWA-125 Wireless N 150 USB)

The computer can see all the available networks but does not connect to any, not even my mobile hotspot.

I tried using a completely different network adapter and that one does not even show any wireless networks.

I have basically come to the conclusion that the is some for of malware blocking access. Can someone help me with this problem?

  • Thank You

Thank you all for the quick responses.

I'm really sorry but I made an error. The desktop which has the problem actually runs on windows Vista.

It's the laptop that I'm writing to you on now which has 7 (Laptop works fine)

Do you think you can still help me with this problem?

LemP, I followed your instructions but it didn't work. Same issue as before. I don't have a router, here, my provider gave us a modem with wireless capacity. Doesn't seem to have a model number, all I know is that its a Gateway.

Ratandeep, I tried the troubleshooting and it basically lists a few things that could be wrong.

Realtek RTL8168 PCI Giganet Ethernet NIC is experiencing a problem

Sometimes it tells me that the D-Link adapter is experiencing problems

Check if the protocol bindings are correct but nothing helps.

I can't install Safety scanner because I have no internet connection on the desktop but can I get the setup and put it on a USB and move it to the desktop?

Please let me know if you can still help me with this problem even though its windows Vista.

    Thank You

PS the make and model of the computer is HP m9457c

Also, every other computer\laptop\phone\pad works on the network.

    Hello Ceronef,

Thank you for posting your question on Microsoft community.

I would like to know some information about the issue so that we could help you better.

What is the make and model of your computer?

I appreciate you for providing details about your issue and your efforts towards resolving it.

This issue may occur either due to corrupt network drivers and settings, issue with the web server, or issue with the network between your computer and the web server.

I would suggest you to try following methods and check if it helps.

    Method 1:

Run network troubleshooter and check the issue.

    Refer:

Using the Network troubleshooter in Windows 7

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Using-the-Network-troubleshooter-in-Windows-7

If it does not help, use method 2.

    Method 2:

Run Microsoft safety scanner to check if the issue is occurring due to any virus or malware.

    Refer:

    Microsoft safety scanner

    http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx

Note: Any data files that are infected may only be cleaned by deleting the file entirely, which means there is a potential for data loss.

    I hope this information helps.

Please do let us know if you need any further assistance.

    Thank you

It's possible that the list of "available wireless networks" is not refreshing, and what you see with your D-Link adapter is only those networks previously available (see, e.g., this question --> http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-networking/wireless-network-list-will-not-refresh-when-i/514c144e-3223-4014-bc41-c0b72bbefd01).  The fact that a separate wireless adapter sees no available networks tends to confirm this hypothesis.

It's possible but IMO pretty unlikely that malware is an issue here.

What is the make and model of your router?  Look at the label on the back or bottom and include any hardware version noted.

With the D-Link adapter connected (and the other one removed), click the up/down arrows in the upper right corner of the list of available networks and see if the list changes:

If after refreshing the list, you still see your network, do the following:

Open the Network and Sharing Center

Click the link to "Manage Wireless Networks"

Select your network from the list and click the "Remove" button

Go back to the list of available networks, select yours, and attempt to connect to it.

If after refreshing the list of available networks, no networks are shown, connect to your router using an Ethernet cable and log into the router's configuration utility.  Check the following:

    • That the router's wireless access point is enabled
    • That the router's wireless mode is set correctly.  Your DWA-125 is a wireless-N device, and wireless-N is supposed to be backwards compatible with wireless-G and wireless-B (and even, in some instances, wireless-A), but some people have reported issues in mixed-mode situations.
    • That the wireless encryption key and encryption mode are set as you remember them.
