Sound Schemes not working - Default only

I am on a brand-new HP laptop that came with Windows 8, which I upgraded to Windows 8.1 the first day I used it. I have only tried customizing after I upgraded to 8.1, so I'm not sure if the sound schemes would have worked if I was still using Windows 8. I've never tampered with my computer or files.

No matter what Theme I try to edit, I can only use the Windows Default sound scheme. It is the only sound scheme that appears in the drop-down menu. Every other Personalization option works for me.

If I browse for a particular sound, folders of all the sound schemes (Garden, Heritage, etc.) that I should have available come up; however, when I open them, they are all empty. I assume the orange icons below the folders are Windows Default sound files:

(^ I actually have sound scheme folders...)

(^ ...but the folders are empty)

I think the problem is that my computer is missing all the sound scheme files besides Windows Default. I don't know why they'd be missing or why the folders are empty.

Any suggestions?

    Hi,

Thank you for the detailed information regarding the issue.

According to me only thing that you are missing is hitting the save button after you make all the changes.

Let’s try to reproduce it one more time following the steps below

    a. Press Windows key + F, type Sound in search, click settings, select Sound from the list.

    b. In the Sound Window, click on the Sounds tab.

    c. Now try to make changes in Program events and click on save.

    d. Now check if you are able to see the new scheme that we created in the scheme drop down.

If you have already tried it before please follow the steps below to perfom the SFC scan, it will repair all system files that are corrupted.

    1. Type “cmd” in the Start screen.
    2. Right-click on it and select “Run as administrator”.
    3. Type the following command and press Enter: sfc /scannow

After performing the steps please update us on the status of the issue.

    Have a good day!!

Taken from the Wikipedia page on "List of features removed in Windows":

"The sound schemes that were first included with Windows 7: Afternoon, Calligraphy, Characters, Cityscape, Delta, Festival, Garden, Heritage, Landscape, Quirky, Raga, Savanna and Sonata are all no longer available; only the folders remain in C:\Windows\Media, and they are empty."

Wasim, you are completely worthless as "Microsoft Support." This question has gone unanswered for over a whole freaking year and I found an answer in less than 5 minutes. Not only that, you absolutely refused to answer the original question, deciding instead to make up your own nonsense. Read the original question next time. It's no wonder so many people have problems with large companies and prefer to pirate since this is the level of support they get.

I have seen this question asked many times and the know it all experts NEVER answer what people are asking. I've searched (literally for hours) for a solution on the internet with no answers.

The only way to get Win 7 sound schemes on Win 8 (8.1) is to go online and find them, then copy each one into their respectine folders in Win 8 Windows/Media. The next part is trickier- I happen to have a copy of Win 7 which I can boot from a usb. You have to locate App Events in the Win 7 registry and export it to a thumb drive. Then just import the values into Win 8 registry. (make sure you back up it first, just in case).

The sound schemes(Afternoon, Quirky, etc.) now appear in the dropdown menu.

That is the worst help ever. It's a shame that you guy working  for Microsoft on these forums would give  dishonest help with these across the board standard answers that you know won;t help. There are no sound files to save, or change to! I know you guys have families with Microsoft windows 8 and 8.1 do you give the same useless answers..................................OH! of course not they get the real solutions they get the workarounds, they have sound schemes!

boraxkarloff - congratulations and well done. Your answer addresses precisely the question that I was seeking on the internet.

Just why on earth MS would leave the sound folders in tact but with no files in them is anyone's guess. In my case I thought I must have had a faulty installation or something else had corrupted the media files.

Your research clarifies the situation - as stupid as it maybe!

    Thanks,

Thanks for actually resolving my sound scheme issue, AstroSurf. When I originally had the problem I tried doing some research, but I never found that Wikipedia article. After Wasim's pathetic "support," I just gave up and let it go. It's ridiculous that Windows removed those sound schemes and still kept the folders. It's also ridiculous how big of a company they are yet this is the "help" we get. Oh well. At least I didn't have a major problem.

Thanks again for resolving this once and for all.
