Mass Storage Device Not Recognised - Drivers & Folder in FileRepository Missing?

Hi guys

For a while, I've noticed external drives and flash drives have not been recognised by my system. In the course of investigating this, I found some promising advice here:

http://www.techspot.com/community/topics/how-to-repair-corrupt-usb-mass-storage-or-cd-dvd-drivers.201738/

I've found that the file "usbstor.pnf" is missing, and when I tried to locate the "usbstor.inf_..." folder in "C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository" to replace the file, I found that it also was not there.

Can anyone advise me on how to rectify this, short of a system refresh? My system restore points don't go back far enough to fix the problem either.

I'm running Windows 8.1 64-bit on a Packard Bell Easynote TE69KB. Happy to provide any other info necessary to assist.

Thanks.
