Install Canon i560 printer

Cannon provides a driver to use for installing a Canon inkjet i560 printer on windows 7 x64.  However, Windows7 has no provision for detecting or using that driver.  Even when the location of the  inf file is entered from the have disk sequence, windows rejects it.  This should be a very simple task.  Why is it next to impossible?

I don't know why Canon can't produce a proper installable driver or at the very least a text file which explians how to get the update to work.

Try disconnecting the printer and then install the update. Restart the computer and then theh re-connect the printer.

If it is not recognised, go to the Canon support page and look for a way to contact Canon directly for support..

You were right, I had the wrong port selected (LPT1).  The correct port to use is "Virtual USB001".  It even works over USB3.

    Thank you for your help.

I just purchased a new PC with Windows 7 64-bit.  I have a Canon i560 printer that I was successfully using with my old XP system.  Using an LPT/parallel to USB adapter, I have connected my i560 to USB port on the new box.  When I added the printer in Windows Devices and Printers, I clicked on the Windows driver search, and it (evidently) found the Windows i560 driver.  The driver is successfully installed (the printer icon, labeled as "Canon Inkjet i560", has a green check mark, and the driver Properties look correct). However, every time I send a page to the printer, the Status is "Printer is not responding".  I have tried rebooting, tried using both the USB 2 and USB 3 ports on the new box, same problem.

    Any advice appreciated.

Adam, your explanation made sense, and the method worked - up until the final installation.

Then, this message came up:    "X Printer driver was not installed. The printer

driver is not compatible with a policy

enabled on your computer that blocks

                                                           NT 4.0 drivers."

How do I change this policy, and install the driver.

The actual problem is that Windows is set by default not to download drivers automatically from Windows Update, despite the fact that this is the "recommended" setting. If you set Windows to download drivers automatically then the printer installs automatically.

Canon do not provide this driver on their website. It is provided by MICROSOFT via Windows Update.

Click the Windows button and choose Control Panel.

Select "System and Security" then "System".

    Choose "Advanced System Settings".

Choose the "Hardware" tab and click on the "Device Installation Settings" button.

Choose "Yes, do this automatically (recommended)", then click on "Save changes".

Now add the printer again and it should work.

Despite Mike Hall's message, the issue here is with Microsoft, not Canon.
